Think it would depend on whether u wired ur balance leads to the + or - terminals on ur cells ya? Anyway, glad I didn’t blow my bms. Gonna try and charge er up now.
Tabs are looking great. But holy hell Batman you need some fishpaper underneath those tabs. Kapton is decent insulation and adhesive for highertemps but not very abrasion resistant. It just takes one tiny scratch and that positive terminal will short with the body of the cell which is entirely negative and sparky sparky boom man
Also, what are you using to glue the cells together? Seems a little yellow
I was hoping I could get away with just kapton tape . Ig I’ll buy some now lmao.
I’m using hot glue, though it’s kinda old an cheap but it seems to do the job fine for now.
I don’t want to sound like I’m hating on you man because I’m not, but please consider this more than just a recommendation because I value your health and safety. Yes, technically it’s not required. Technically, fishpaper on the positive terminals aren’t required. And technically, you can get away just soldering wires on the positive terminals. But we dont these things and actually follow safety precautions and use proper materials to minimize death. Sorry if I seem a little triggered. I just received warning of evacuation due to the fires so I’m stressed lol.
Yeah I gotcha, I definitely don’t wanna start fires or anything. I just ordered some but it comes on Monday
Once I get the fishpaper on the packs and kapton tape it, shrink wrap is redundant right?
The shrinkwrap is there for extra ingress protection (keeps the big stuff out) and also stiffens up the whole thing to keep bits from shifting around.
It’s not required, but highly recommended.
Don’t cheap out on your battery supplies. Not just cells, the whole enchilada.
You do know to use fishpaper to isolate your P-groups from each other, right? That’s a big one.
Not necessary unless you don’t properly secure your battery pack in your enclosure and things start partying around like Florida at the start of covid. Things will get nasty similarly
But highly recommended
Alrighty, I think I’ll get some shrink wrap and foam too. Thanks for the help guys
Fine, I’ll be the dad here
I took a vow of cell-ibacy when it came to battery related dad jokes.
So hey quick update. Setting the bms to balance when not charging worked. Took a few days and a couple charge cycles.
Below are shots of when it was off. And now today before and after a ride.
Awesome, glad that worked out for you and it stayed mostly uniform to what it was before you started riding.
Gotta love the static balance. Best reason to go with a smart bms aside from just the cool app.
this is interesting as fuck…
in my mind I was just conjuring a eMTB super light and nimble, P42Aswas where I was heading or probably 12s2P lipos I want it light, nimble as fuckk… 2.9kg of battery with that chonky BMS is outta the pik…
customer wants ok, I get it… but get serious that BMS has no reason to be in a pack that small…
argue all you want… safety all you want… but that BMS is redick…
I’m also curious why you chose that pack pattern? and some of your nickel edges overhanging the pack upsets my OCD
but “she will work”
12s1p is it. A 6s 5Ah pack is around 900g so 1.8kg total. With it you are going to have a blast for 5-7km…save the second pack in you bagpack
It won’t cut if it’s not wired for discharge. But i would anticipate sag city. I’d ask how confident you are that your thermistor is picking up accurate data, but whatever.
Agree with @kook
that’s a GREAT idea… thanks brother!!!
I’m thinking about an under 10kg sk8 park jumping thingie
12s1p to get me there and back and a 12s1p to rage at the park…
stop that fukking nonsense right-the-fukk-NOW
Under 10kg is difficult but with small motors and the right deck and trucks it’s possible.
The beauty of top mount batteries is that it’s super easy to swap out packs.
I do that all the time. Definitely easier to jump with I light board and a second pack on your shoulders than both on the board.
If you are looking for a budget but good lipo I can recommend the hobbyking heavy duty 6s 5Ah 60c packs. Not as good as the graphens, but even in 1p config there is like no sag at all.
thanks for the recco and I appreciate the lipo knowledge I only know lipos from what I fly… and yeah I know 10KGs is tight but do-able… I may go smallish motors or a big ass Saite running as a dual single… a Popsicle deck with AT12s 160 tires and laminate ABS on the undercarriage… 26"~28" wheelbase 30 degrees a side front and back… with bindings etc if I go to 11kgs I won’t be upset
