The battery builders club

Just got my kWeld set up and did my first two welds

How do they look? I didn’t try super hard to pull the two strips apart but they seem to be quite stuck together, the strip onto the battery left two little circles of nickel when I pulled it off.

haha, those look good! Is this your first welder? I just upgraded to a kweld and the welds are outstanding.

anyway, I always tell people not to do this, but here I go, anyway. tearing down used packs to make another battery

First welder yep, default settings (50J for 0.2mm nickel), first two welds. It was pretty easy to set up and I went from kit in the bag to welding in about an hour.

I am going to be re-using some cells too lol but I have a good idea of their condition. It’s gonna take a while to dremel off all the little bits left over on them before I weld though

Obviously this premium price on the kWeld is quite steep, but to me it is worth it and I will probably end up writing it off as a business expense at the end of the year, so I just considered it an investment.

$235 for the welder and then $80 something for the battery from HobbyKing

For the supplies, the nickel I bought was like $17 and then I just got all these for like 8 bucks from Ali:

none of that for me.
I’m tryna go wholesale here :joy:
put a disc sander thingy on a drill press, hold the cells with two hands, waaaay easier

Yeah haha I saw that contraption, unfortunately until I get more space I can’t pick up a drill press lol

The dremel isn’t too bad, but 10-20 seconds per cell x 60 adds up

Real quick. What are your favorite widths everyone for nickel larger then 10mm. Having some cut tomorrow / china time. 40mm, 20mm, ??

It’s a labor of love to reuse cells like this.
160+ cells ripped from a perfectly good pack and tortured on the sander. only to go back in the same holders…

Finally the day came. I rebuild my Raptor 2.1 Battery… Matter of fact this is my first completely new battery built ever… I might need some help with the Smart BMS later.

Why are some of the cells different…?

On the old battery the one on the right I used my old electronic cigarette batteries to see if the board worked on it… Plus those were my first K weld spot welds. On other threads people to me not to do it but I just wanna see if it fixed the problem.

haha, you coulda said “it shipped like that” and I would have believed you :joy:

Took it back of, demmeled caps and repeat. Don’t want my first ever build to blow up.

completely novice analysis here checking my knowledge.

In this setup does this mean 4p * 15a 60A series current through the single strip of nickel to the next p group? is that a concern?
