The battery builders club

why you wouldnt leave some wire unsoldered?

Because that increases the chance you’ll have a dry joint. If the top of the braid is totally wetted out, then the bottom contact patch is much more likely to be as well.

Just saw this on youtube, looks kinda dangerous doesn’t it? No fishpaper at all

Youtube is full of these unprotected battery builds. Just saw a video of The Inja, they made a large 72v motorcycle battery with no fishpaper whatsoever.

Videos like that make me feel like a professional battery builder lol!

Lol panasonic ncr18650b. I use those for my flashlights. Continuous discharge rating iirc less than 5A. His little 4P pack can do… 20A? :joy: The voltage sag on those is insane too. Even boosted is better than that…

But they have outstanding cycle life, that’s part of what they are designed for. Not the No1 attribute that’s important for esk8 though.

Yeah they do. But with reasonable power draw. That’s why I love em for flashlights. Unless you pull less than 3A per cell those are going to get way too hot and damage sooner than other cells.

They are great for large packs with humongous p groups like in the Model S. This way the current drawn from the individual cell is well below spec, combine that with a battery management that limits charge to 20-80% and you can get up to 40,000 cycles.

This is true. But even for those cars, because of the DC fast charge requirements, the cells still are much over built. Charge one of those NCRs in 30 minutes at the rate of DC fast charge and it would be burning hot.

And I think for PEV it is nearly unrealistic, to match the amp draw of a 10s5p 30Q, you would need a 10s20p. Your range would be out of the world but the sheer number of cells is nutty.

Yeah, there are probably better cells than the 18650b right now.
The problem with the 30q is that it dies quickly after approx. 500 cycles, no matter how well you treated it. This cell was made for power tools: hard punch, recharged maybe twice a year.
But if it’s not a commuter, 500 cycles is still plenty I think.

It kind of comes down to the 3 things but you can have 2 deal. Power output, energy density, life cycle. 30Q has the first two, ncr has the second two, we yet have the technology (hopefully soon) to have all 3. But 500 cycles is still a 2-3 year span for frequent use, and the 500 cycles could be slightly more if the cells are charged slower and not used at peak discharge often, so still not too bad.

Totally true. I am still going to use a NCA cell for my ebike, as I intend to use it almost daily.
For esk8 30Q is great if you want 18650, otherwise I think 21700 is on the rise (Tesla switched to it as well) and has some great options.

Take a look at Klaus. 10S12P with 50E.

I’m waiting on dem NMC cells from tesla that claims 10% degradation at 4000 cycles. Doubt it’s going to be available for mass market purchase anytime soon but here’s to hoping for 2021

I don’t like this proportion. Ridiculous capacity but only ok current draw. I prefer good capacity and good draw, that’s more balanced

The bus of eskate. Won’t get you anywhere in a hurry but it’ll just keep going and going.

70% on a baja is enough

Errr what? I recharge my power tool batteries twice a day …

Not sure exactly what cells are in the milwaukee batteries, @Pottsy might know… but they are warrantied for 3 yrs…

The average household doesn’t :joy:
