Robot blocked Batman a while ago if no one else noticed. “If you can’t contain your disdain, block them so we don’t have to hear it every week” should be a rule

Hi All, I won’t specifically speak for @longhairedboy - but I think I can channel the overall sentiment about adding more mods - we’re not inclined to do that currently. We’re handling the mod work well right now with a small team. We may not clean up every thread, or do so as quickly as some desire, but the core work is getting done.

and I want to add how much I appreciate @xsynatic for all he does!

The problem is that with how the Discourse system works it’s either all or nothing.

Discourse (as far as i know) doesn’t allow for specific rights to be granted without upgrading to a whole different trust level. So for me being able to do more, means he HAS to make me a mod, which means i have access to system wide infos and data. I couldn’t care less about that stuff but meh, not my decision.

I am already at the highest point, without being a mod.

But. My Alien badge? I feel this should be doable. :alien:

I meant more like in the sense of rewarding what you do here for free. Idk if you have better stuff to do or not, still.

You have to dm longhairboy for that.

Hell end up with no badge and the title “Has an alien badge.”

I did. He tried. Like glyph has this deplorable badge. Its doable.

Genuine and general question for people that see a failure to moderate on here. I say genuine because I’m legit trying to make sure I understand and not to try and throw shit at people and general because I don’t think there’s value in me quoting one person and picking apart specific wording, or accidentally picking a bad example. So if you posted or liked posts about policing, pre-emptive bans vs not enough bans, need for extra moderation, anything of that sort can you give some examples of cases that have been handled wrong and how you’d prefer to handle them?

The example above from Kai, X, Linesflag and Evan is good - roughly boiling down to “I think it’s unfair to X, and also sometimes he’s asleep and there’s a shitshow that just takes ages to recategorise” on one hand and from X’s pov it’s roughly “nah I’m g, it’s not stressful”. IMO an extra leader or two could be helpful just for burning through stupid miscategorisations or time zones, and until now I also thought it was a bit unfair on him, but it seems relatively minor now.

Maybe separate maybe same question; what’s the tie between the failure of moderation and driving away users or people going to facebook? Again I promise genuine question looking for info, not trying to score points in a fight. IMO the main things on here that drive people away are

  1. SEO not showing our stuff to people and the discourse search function/our own indexing of stuff not making it perfect to find info (not very related to mods or leadership IMO)
  2. The hobby being legit dangerous and us being very cautious, leading to people feeling either scared off or potentially talked down to or taking a “hey pls don’t do that you’ll burn your house down” message as an attack (something we could work on but only up to a point, also could be wrong on this)
  3. Insular or cliquey nature of the bunch of us nerds who hang out here. Again this is kinda vague, but the in-jokes, active hate or casual shade on specific people/companies in the hobby/industry, heated discussion or fighting about the one right way to do something in technical topics because they’re being discussed by passionate people, and the fact that very few people here are professionals in the niche area of science communication/tech education/noob management/etc so we make mistakes. This one we can definitely work on, but IMO I think the only thing active moderation can give here is either to set a good example by being more like evangelists, noob advocates, onboarders, or maybe maaaybe to give out more minor slap-on-the-wrists style moderation to get well meaning or frustrated members to be nicer to noobs. As you can guess, I’m tentative on that last point but it could work really well if that specific set of problems are what people think are what need to be solved.

I say we need more leaders mostly so they can step in and say “you’re being an obnoxious idiot, stop it please,” and actually have that represent the community. Instead of the current system of counting down til the next dumpster fire xD

Idk if it’s been said yet but there needs to be a better alternative to “find that string of comments from years ago buried in a mildly relevant thread that’ll answer your question” as a general response to threads that have been made before. Too many times do I see people asking for help with their issue only to be met by a ton of “look it up” and the like.

Idk what the solution or better alternative would be, I think maybe organize the citadel into a more usable tool, idk.

I’m glad you posted this, as this thread became solely focused on mod issues, when being a landing point for new or aspiring DIYers, and an up-to-date resource for both new and current users is the real goal.

we need more leaders so every time I make a thread it gets deleted

A forum is not the ideal format for this, far from it. We need a real wiki for this.

Hey @Evwan maybe put this in the top post? A real wiki would be bomb.

agreed 1000000%. wikis are much easier to navigate then the silly search bar that nobody seems to use anyways

If we had a real wiki that would be easily the most comprehensive guide on how to do anything in esk8 really. There is so much information scattered in here, just think of the battery builders thread for example.

Our best method of telling someone how to build a good pack is pointing them to a thread with 17K posts, no wonder people just leave sometimes.

speaking of shitshows. This is where the judgement differs. Do i overreact when i move it? Am i hindering the end of a discussion if a set a slow-mode? The only reason why the “i’m a bully” drama took so long to clean up was because i literally couldn’t move it. Discourse rejected every tiny movement.

This goes for everyone, if you feel something is misplaced and i haven’t done anything, please PM or tag me! My eyes can’t catch everything and my brain might not see it as something that could’ve been moved.

If we at least could change categories, otherwise it’ll just be someone else telling the user to change the category, nothing else we can do about it.
