So this will be veery long, I apologize for that but I feel it’s all sorta relevant so bear with me
We’ll start in the spring of 2017, I had a steady job (as a sailmaker), a second hand apartment and a little weed growing business going, money was no issue, life was easy, life was good…
I’d been on my longboard since i was 14, mostly as transport but whenever possible bombin dem hillz!
Someone showed me a boosted board, I remember thinking “Thats cool but for that price not for me”.
Also I just upgraded trucks, bushings and wheels so i felt like finally had the board i wanted,
so I began a whooping 5 min search to find a instructable to a DIY electric longboard for 300$.
Thought about it and decided “nah too expensive of a project with the potential to ruin my awesome transportation”
A few weeks pass and while surfing the great web i see a ebay auction for a brushless outrunner, cant remember the price but it was st00pid cheap, like 10$ or so so i put in a offer and got it!
Fuck yeah! I´m doing this, back to the instructable to order all the parts (which of course i could not find so went with cheaper replacements), here’s what i ordered;
Motor mount and pulleys
Racestar 120A Esc
6s 4200mah battery
https://www.amazon.com/-/es/22-2V-4200mAh-LiPO-Batería-enchufe/dp/B078R88CSK
GT2E controller and reciever
https://hobbyking.com/en_us/hobbyking-gt2e-afhds-2a-2-4ghz-2-channel-radio-system.html
And the motor was a Nobrand (well i think the brand was NeoDym actually) 580(!)kv
Delivery on most of these things were over a month, but I didnt care, it was dirt cheap and if everything failed it wouldn’t matter, I’d just replace it…
Well life kinda happened during this month (maybe 2 or 3 but its irrelevant), I lost my job due to not enough customers and since I was last in, first out.
I lost my appartment (not allowed to rent 2nd hand) and all my growing equipment was sold to friends, my options were to move back home to my parents (im 30 at the time this happens) or to move to my boat which was really my brothers but that i had been maintaining and using for the last couple of seasons, I asked him and he said it was fine, so I became a captain!
Oh and here’s Bob, my faithful companion, a English Bullterrier, he’s turning 11 this year!
He also moved with me to the boat!
Lets see, I think were now in the late summer of 2017, the stuff had arrived but as you might imagine building a murder board was not on the top of my list anymore for some strange reason…
Now to the story pertains that I was living in Sweden, on the southwest coast but still fakking cold at winter, even in the summer i ran my heating fan… Thats not kewl, if you live on a boat you want warmer climate, at least i did and I always dreamed of having a farm with medicinal plants on La Gomera in the canaries, so I decided to follow through on that!
That summer was spent fixing the boat, buying necessary (and unnecessary) equipment and to afford this, since i had no job, I sold weed and DJ’d at underground Psytrance events, good combination but very tiring…
At a rave (i think i was in the setup crew but could just been attending) I met a girl, she was amazing, after seeing eachother about 3 months I asked if she’d want to sail with me, she was burnt out from working and also needed a change of lifestyle so she happily agreed!
Planned to leave in October, but we finally left Sweden in the end of November 2017
Im not going to go into too much detail about our trip (you can check out our Youtube if you are interested https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyXOJLInxeahhqEHr_CF0Hw where we summarize the first two years of our trip), I’ll just mention the countries we went through;
Sweden, Denmark, Germany (found some work stayed 4 months), Holland (our motor was stolen so stayed a year working there to afford a new one, also had a effin awsome job in a coffeshop selling weed legally ;D) then in Maastricht, we took down the mast and continued through the channels onto Belgium and through France, we are now in the summer of 2018 and were planning to exit the channels into the mediterranean when we met a older English couple living on a big motorboat who advised us to follow them up Canal du Midi and spend the winter in a little town called Capestang since there should be work on other boats for us and we could stay on the channel bank for free, so we went there, No work, only retired English ppl who liked cheap wine and cheap labor…
this was the First FUCK!
We decided to leave to the Med before the locks closed for the winter.
Second FUCK!
Water level is too low due to draught, (side note: French port authorities are NOT to be trusted when asked about depth!) we kept bouncing of the bottom, not a nice experience on a sailing boat with led keel I’ll tell you… Had to go back to Capestang.
Third FUCK!
Locks close for the winter, were stuck for three months minimum, no work, no money, no running water, no electricity but worst of all NO heating, so a long cold workless winter began…
Fourth FUCK!
Surviving on begging our families for money coupled with sporadic work spring finally comes,
we are now in March 2018 and we call the lockkeeper to schedule a passing of the locks to the med, lock keeper laughs and says its closed due to some shit called COVID19…
Lockdown, we are not allowed to leave the boat without an identification and a paper, this allows us to walk the dog, buy food and tobacco and nothing else.
Fifth FUCK!
My mother dies, I am not allowed to attend the funeral or to see my family due to travel restrictions…
Fast forward to end of May and the restrictions are lifted, we are allowed to leave so we head out into the med.
My Dad (now alone) has a boat in the canaries (he’s a retired captain who’s been at sea since he was 16) and suggests that we sail to Barcelona to meet him there where he could stay a few days before going to the canaries.
Sailing is hard, we are tired, still no work…
We make our way down the costa brava to reach Barcelona, my dad can’t come due to the district of Catalunya being closed because of Covid, he flies directly to the Canaries…
I find some work here and there, mostly 20-50euro type of things but still something, my girlfriend is a hairdresser so for her not so much… ppl are very scared of covid and its not easy to make new contacts…
I find a friend who has a metal, wood and leather workshop in the harbour, another friend that builds an electric bike which i get to try and realize I still have all the stuff that i bought for my board in the boat…
So in November 2021 with the help of the tools of my friend i began building, the GT2E did’nt work anymore, water damage presumably, dumb as i am threw it out… a few days/weeks later i realize i have a Turningy Evolution from Flysky which should bind to the flysky reciever, it did.
In December we decide to sell the boat and my girlfriend goes to Sweden.
As Im writing this the boat has been sold and on the 20th of February im (hopefully) flying to see my dad for the first time in three years…
WTF ARE YOU ON ABOUT WHERE’S THE BUILD!?
Board: Stella “Irie crest” 46" Longboard gifted to me many a years back from my sister
link
(here it is from a catalog from 2012 https://www.sdsskateboards.com/images/SDS_cat_2012_web.pdf)
Trucks: Paris 180mm
Wheels: Orangatang Durian 75mm 86a
Motor: 580kv 4650
Chinese motor mount + Pulleys and belt (Modified screws)
ESC: Racestar 120A ESC
Battery: TCB 6s 4200mah Battery
Do not have any pictures of the original setup unfortunately, motor worked good about 50km, amazingly strong, could pull 2 ppl up to 30kmh on flat, more top speed than i ever dared to go, 53km/h according to the calc 15/46 gearing, but i bet it was faster, I’ve bombed hills in 60 but i never dared to go full speed with this motor… Shorted pretty soon though, combination of bad wiring in the motor together with vibrations.
Happened when starting so luckely no fall from the failure, it just jerked a little and then a puff of smoke, unplugged everything and esc was fine, bought a new motor
Had to buy a new pulley, different bore, found this with one week delivery but it meant downgrading to 10mm belt, at least it got me riding again
Took about 20km then this happened:
Thanks to having found the forum by then and seen @Lee_Wright’s video on battle hardening i slapped some sweet 2 part epoxy filler (Hempel’s for boats) in there and she was up and running again the next day!
Also managed to rip one of the cells wide open on a cut away pole so no shes rockin 5s!
So here we are today in all her splender and glory!
Anyways thats me, right now, any questions feel free!
Jah Bless
