Split Decision | 4WD IDEA Split Angle Build

Well, the mold is done. Now onto buying materials for the actual layup. Starting with the epoxy as i already have some 200gsm 3k twill weave. I’ll also need some mold release, i want to try the spray on stuff this time. This stuff is way pricey.

It has been 22+ years since I used West systems Epoxy, and I hope they improved it since.

I recall it being very thick, taking forever to saturate cloth, very stinky, yellowish when new, browned quickly with minimal UV exposure, and had the odd 4:1 , or was it 5:1 mixing ratio, and was very intolerant of slightly improper ratio.

I moved onto System 3 which was 2:1. ratio by volume. Their General purpose resin was nothing special. Sb112 and Clearcoat were my goto for laminating wood surfboards. Clearcoat for wood and fiberglass saturation, sb112 for filling the weave. Kind of got priced out of system 3, before trying their newer Silvertip formulation,.and then tried budget friendly APEX laminating resin, and then realized how much better System 3 was.

Apex got better over the years, and I just got used to working with it, and could just drive and buy it a few miles away in Socal.
Now on other side of country and ordered it, as its good enough and i am used to its behavior.

Wanted to try Resin Research Laminating Epoxies. The laminators in surfboard factories seemed to prefer working with it as of a few years ago, but am not upto date on latest and greatest. But the West system really left a bad lasting impression on me.

Huh, interesting. I’ve never tried anything else, but i used west systems a year ago for an FSAE nosecone, and it seemed fine for that. Might try some other epoxies if i have the time and budget after esk8con.

Sample set of four BRP hubs has been ordered! If the quality is up to scratch, I’ll be proceeding with the full batch shortly after. Also, its unfortunately looking like Split Decision won’t be finished in time for esk8con (atleast not while maintaining my level of polish i want), so I’m flying there empty handed

I’ve got a replacement board lined up to ride around though, and worst case i can still take some dope photos at the event for all of you going

I aint dead yet. Hubs are looking good, i should have them in hand soon lol. Hopefully they’re up to my expectations. Unfortunately, final delivery will have to be pushed back after esk8con, apologies to anyone who was hoping for a set for the races

Daaayum those are Purdy.

They’re prettier in person. Couple dimensions have to be modified, but overall the fit and finish, machining quality is WELL up to scratch, I’d actually say they’re better than the factory i used for the 53T pulleys. I’ll be bringing them to esk8con if anyone wants to oogle over them in person, as well as a bunch of my 53T pulleys which will be on sale.

Hey guys, just wanted to give you an update on the hubs, heres some photos of them -

Shitposting aside, the hubs are on their way to completion, and now that moe has “copied” my work without the analysis behind it or the credit towards me for the legwork, I’m no longer incentivized to leave room in the market. There will be a further price cut

I can keep going, I’ll fund this shit with my dayjob if i have to.

Does the grime come included for that $65/hub or do i have to pay extra?

I’m not dead! My wallet may be, but I’m not. Hubs are still happening, despite the cheeto’s best efforts, and I’m holding the promise to beat pricing of certain grime covered alternatives you may have seen. Hoping to get final pricing locked in (or as locked in as i can get in these conditions) shortly and then pay for the production run. I’ll be reaching out to those of you that indicated you were in for a set to confirm this weekend.

Alright, I’ve sent messages to most of you that indicated interest in the BRP hubs, I’m not making that many extras as i dont wanna be stuck with a bunch of stock, so if you’re interested and havent received a message from me, now is the time

Pricing is pretty much locked in, same as before

And of course, the #fuckstooge discount is still available.

AMAZING.

thank you for standing up to the delusions of a boy who is sad he couldn’t figure out how to install fusion.

I’m working on making really cheap and open source straight cut steel gear drives. I’ll make sure it’s compatible with these :star_struck:

How bad were the tariffs?

Tariffs actually weren’t horrible. Cut into my profits a bit but i wasnt making these to make money so i just ate it lol.

High build primer, sanded smooth, then paint, check, sand at 600 grit, paint layer again, repeat until satisfied, then probably a final layer of some kind of gelcoat. Havent finished it, I’ve kind of gotten sidetracked working on my car haha.

Also, just remembered to mention - if you need dimensions or sketch views of the hubs so you can ensure compatability, shoot me a message and ill help out where i can with that - nobody should have to reverse engineer a part when its not necessary to
