Chemical elements have different properties, depending on their composition.
Sodium and chlorine are very dangerous on their own but combine them: BOOM, table salt.

Pack shape is like a CBXR, donāt know if itās made by Chi, maybe not. That battery box looks like a stock XR battery box, which is a really bad compressive fit for such a large pack. Generally, that pack shape is not a great ideaā¦itās risky on its own, more so being installed into the stock XR box where the fit is insanely compressed.
Really terrible to see, Iām sorry that happened.
Iām no stranger to a Onewheel battery fireā¦ Godspeed in the cleanup. Do be careful.

Thereās no real way to say. Thereās no entity tracking battery fires in eskate (which is very segmented between DIY/builder groups, factory produced customers, riding communities, etc.) and so itās hard to determine what happens and why.
Same for Onewheels. Future Motion Onewheels are the most common type, DIY is still uncommon. However the presence of modified boards is fairly large. No one knows exactly how large, or how many of them catch fire, and why.
Installing larger batteries into enclosures that donāt fit them is pretty common in the Onewheel space, for a few reasons, and I imagine that leads to failures in several cases. How many, I have no earthy idea.
Any battery fire, can have the same configuration of device, and a totally different cause. Unfortunately, analyzing such a fire is difficult or impossible, since it gets destroyed.
Either wayā¦itās terrible. And it seems like it was just the board that burned, and if so, Iām grateful to see that. Genuinely hope that no other damage or harm happened.

Definitely a CHI battery CBXR.
she got caught in a light rain storm, it was badgered, but it was a couple years old.
Sure was at an air bnb when it decided to go thermal. Luckily she grabbed it and threw it outside.
It sucks, but her old man and i have been building her a 20s vesc. So things arenāt all bad.

My guess would be the very strict adherence to a specific form factor limits changes that could make this less likely.
The +XR line of onewheels has insufficient gasket design and waterproofing. This was improved in later generations of onewheel, but the +XR is still the preferred platform for modding/form factor.
Would be kool to see a thread with just pics of everyoneās stash of power port, charging station-board hang out-fire starter hazardous areas.
I call mine the ICU cuz it looks like a life support facility when I have both boards, 9-shread lights and both remotes all hooked up and charging at once.

In the gas/smoke there are all sorts of incredibly nasty things (see below).
In the sootā¦mostly metals, including carcinogenic cobalt.
The cytotoxicity (to human cells) is significantly higher than wood soot.
