Mount the male side on the skate and use the female side for the key.

When you use the loop key, make sure you push the plug in ALL THE WAY every time you use it. If it’s only partially plugged and you ride around on it, you will burn up the resistor inside the key, requiring you to make another one. Also, that’s one of the multiple reasons to mount the male side to the board (making a key from the female side).

and also the female side is more difficult to smash if it’s in your pocket and you lean up against something or sit on it.

Another reason is for mounting – you can’t really mount the female version with epoxy because then the epoxy is in the way for the male to plug into it. The male has a sheath that wraps around the body of the female connector.
