Have had literally the same yesterday:
Just paused the print at when there was ~1 inch of filament outside the feeder and swapped it with the new spool.

Don’t you guys have a empty spool detection? Like your printer going “BRAAA BRAAA BRAAA” and pausing the print if it’s empty?

This thing likes to ruin lots of the prints. Stock ender 3 does not have it

I do not. My printer has difficulty with paused prints. It continues to ooze and doesn’t retract

How many hours?
How do people go at it? Pause, bring in a new piece, and hope there isn’t an air bubble?
Set 20 timers on my phone and feed one roll in as it sucks the last bit in 
Sucks more on bowden setups when the entire tube length isn’t retracting properly but it masks it fine usually.
