Btw dude last week I opened my fireproof lipo bag to charge and caught a sweetish epoxy like whiff. The lipos weren’t swelling and cells were balanced, but I think they may have began to leak electrolyte, so I disposed of em

A bit of offgassing is normal with pouch cells, and is only noticeable because you left it enclosed in a small mostly airtight bag for a period of time. All my new batteries do this.

There should never, ever be any gas/vapor escaping from any li-ion cell.

They do not “off-gas” anything from inside the cell unless they are damaged. In that case immediately stop using the cell and recycle/replace it. The vapor would be flammable and is toxic.

In crappier pouch cells there can be residue in between the layers along the edges, outside of the bonded seams of the pouch. This residue can release an odor, especially when heated up, and is hopefully the source of the odors Person 2 was referring to.

The pouch material itself can also smell pretty bad if heated up, especially if in a LiPo bag.

That sickly, sweet smell Person 1 mentioned sounds like one or more cells popped open or there was a lot of residue along the edges of a cell. Electrolyte smells like that.

Person 2 is only correct if he is referring to the outside materials or edge residue smelling bad.
