Noob question thread! 2020_Summer

Any breaking is too much. You ideally want no breaking at all.

Judging from todays ride to work, that did the trick. Thanks a bunch!

Give the guy a brake! :joy:

…ok

But what about battery health, regen and over charging?

If you have breaking then something isn’t healthy. It depends what broke.

Is there a VESC tool available that works with firmware 5.1? Trying to set up remote input and it doesn’t want to do it over CAN with “old firmware” that I can’t seem to update to 5.2.

Or what fields can I go through manually to get my remote working on the esc across CAN?

Found VESC tool 2.06 and that works with 5.1

There is no such thing as too much braking, as you meant. The right amount of braking is the highest amount you can take without falling off the board in my opinion. Usually I set mine so I can spin my wheels at full brake lol

As for the battery voltage, pulsed peaks aren’t too bad, but can be terrible on a discharge BMS. My experience with this is very bad. When you have something that limits the voltage spikes, it tends to turn off the vescs. Terrible time, you brake, and end up with the board turning off and no brakes. Terrifiying.

Anyways, this is what rheostatic brake modules are for, but they haven’t caught on. Most of us just either let our batteries take a little bit of a beating, or try to plan routes so that the first thing is either an uphill or a decent bit of flat. It’s generally regarded that braking on full battery isn’t good practice.

need some glue to hold bits down in the enclosure
hot glue isnt strong enough

what can i use instead

thanks

silicone.

I’m currently trying out these 3m 1 part pads, though only for smaller bits like gps module, metr, receiver etc.

i can never work out which silicone is good

the sealant is useless and i have ordered a few different glues and most have been weak and very soft (even when cured)

i actually use dual lock a lot, in my builds and at work, but i just got a big black roll of it. it works just fine for smaller stuff, but it isnt really the strongest hols, i wouldnt trust it to hold anything even medium weight against gravity, especially under vibration. my best use for it so far is a strip on the bottom of my board, and a strip on my remote, so i can just stick it on my board when not in use or when i go in the store. also the adhesive on it seems to bond very well with plastic, and painted wood, but not so much on metal or carbon fiber.

Some ‘industrial’ hook and loop might work well; not sure what’s available to you since you’re in the UK but I’ve had good luck with it

Another viable (probably better) solution might be to use some 3M VHB tape alongside some sacrificial shrink wrap to tape things down to your enclosure. So if you were sticking a BT module in, I’d use some shrink to wrap the module (even if it already has some) and then stick some of this stuff to the shrink you just put on and where you want it in the enclosure.

The VHB is available to me on Amazon, ymmv across the pond

Oh yeah I should mention, I’ve only use the former on small bits, nothing big like a battery or esc

i dont wanna use tape as often its things like gluing wires in place or similar

some strong glue would be perfect but at the same time it needs to be removable (even if it requires a bit of work to remove)

when taking apart a lacroix recently they had some really strong black glue holding stuff in place. anyone know what that is

It might be this:

that looks like normal hot glue (just in black)

i tried using hot glue but its just not strong enough for what i need

If it’s not what others have been using for their battery packs, I think getting some neutral cure silicone will work just fine. If it’s going on wires i believe any silicone should be fine, but having neutral cure stuff lying around for when you need electronic-friendly silicone is nice. Basically what @xsynatic said lol

Use silicone bro.
