My Esk8s. A journal of sorts

Cheers to the start of longer days.

Today I got a Pedal Lowering kit for the Electric Unicycle.

It moves the pedals down about 30mm, and outward some as well.

I went and rode about 11 miles at lunch and I really like the feeling.

I can see the pedals get way closer to the ground, so it could be an issue riding single tracks, and clipping stuff.

But I expect that would have to be really bad for me to take these off.

The lowered ride had a nice vibe I need to get more of!!!

It was nice out enough tonight to go for a night ride after the kids went to bed.

I felt like riding the EUC since I’m excited about the lower pedals.

So I started rolling through the neighborhood, and as I was riding out of the neighborhood I saw my neighbor riding his ebike with his kid.

Heading towards the same trail connector I was heading to.

So he stopped to say hi and they were just out for a leisurely ride.

So we went and rode together!!!

Impromptu mini group ride.

It’s cool they were out doing the same thing as me.

We rolled through campus and actually ended up on the University golf course, which was a real trip.

I have ridden Onewheels there during the day.
Tonight was different.
It was dark, and the undulating narrow sidewalk was pretty intense.

It was super fun.

Neighbor and his kid were stoked.

I ended up riding 14 miles.

Which was the magic number to hit 1000 miles on the EUC!

–New Chain Drive Time–

Yesterday I got my new chain drive from @Facko to put on the Llama Links.

The open steel gears are solid.
They work.
They are affordable.
They have gearing options.
They have great power transfer.

But I could not get over the noise…

So fucking loud the whole fucking time!!!

So off they go.

And on go the chains.

Let’s hope the 3rd drive on this board is the charm.

I have been running Facko’s chain drive on the Gravel Boi for several months now, and it has been great

The chains work
It’s also affordable. At about 140 for everything.
They have gearing options.
They have great power transfer.

So they win here because of the noise…

Compared to the open gears it’s night and day.

– so onto putting the chains on we go.

This set I got from Facko is 33/9
I’m actually running 33/10 with pulleys off Amazon…
But look at how adorable the little wheel gear is.
Soo cute.

It’s shameful. But I don’t have a drill press.

I barely managed to drill one hole in each pulley. And broke the drill on the third hole attempt.
But I got my tiny M4 grub screw in there. Let’s hope it holds up…

So on we go.
Tiny sprocket is cute.

This pulley puller worked out nicely here.

I am back to being responsible and using circlips on my motors @Shadowfax

Just needed to add these motor spacers from NewBee.

Here are the drives side by side.

Both so industrial.

The chains I have heard are quieter than open spur gears, but still make a kinda jet like noise. How are you finding them?

I like them dude.
I’m happy.

Here is a little bit of video with sound.

I rode 12 miles today.
Had to go back after a couple miles to retighten one of the motors.

But besides that it ran really well.

I am super happy about the change because I am no longer mad at the noise.

For whatever reason it really got to me. And was bumming me out on rides.

So that is behind me now.

Now I can got back to worrying about the 3 links coming apart on me…
I wonder if everyone that has these trucks lives in fear of one of the 20 connection points coming loose during a ride…

I really dig the look of these trucks.
I thought the gears looked super cool with them too.

But I also think the chains look killer.

It’s interesting how on the bench the gears look to have much better free roll.

I can’t say that I notice any difference in the way the gears ride vs the chains.

The breaks maybe feel stronger with the gears.

The gearing I have was really close.
It was 3.39 with 78/23
Now 3.3 with 33/10

And i expect speed to really be about the same.

However. The board felt. Good bit faster.

I think I had only hit 28mph before.
And today I hit 31.

So that is a welcome change.

I’m looking forward to getting out on it more.

Today’s ride was nice.
It was sunny and 70.

I actually ran over to Sam’s to grab some coffee.
One thing is for sure this thing is not ideal for running errands… But I hucked it onto the cart and made it work.

The ride home was delightful.

That sounds really good.

It’s a huge contrast to belts.

It’s a huge contrast to the steel gears.

This is not an ideal comparison because here I was in a parking garage, so the sound was amplified.

I’m surprised your open gears were so loud. I had a chance to ride @dskate Venom build in January. His open gears were more quiet than my old straight cut Moon GDs.

I wonder if they get more quiet as you break them in?

I went out at midnight.
Had it super loose.
Just rolled up the block really.
Only 3.6 miles.

But fuck dude.
So cool.
So different from other set ups too.

Super lean!!!

This is only possible thanks to MAD wheels too @fujio001

You would be a good candidate for the 125 x 80mm version coming out this summer!

That would probably be really good on this board!!!

That thing is so wild looking.

It’s so wrong.
But it feels so right.

Dude.

This weekend I legit had group rides with my 4 and a half year old.

It’s the most epic thing!!!

We rode from the house to the school several times this weekend.

He says.
“I want you to follow me”

He is feeling that throttle!!!

I like this concept for a street board. You don’t have to worry about an enclosure scraping against the ground and you can get the board really low. I may have to try a similar set-up this year.
