My Esk8s. A journal of sorts

Here you go.

Thank you! This would definitely be me

So civilized. You don’t like spending an entire evening rebuilding those little bearings with a HF bearing press because you tried to pry the pinion gear off by the bearing like an idiot?

How do you even find all the tiny balls…

I popped a couple of the little ones and it exploded everywhere…

Hands and knees with a flashlight. 4 or 5 beers deep so the illusion that I could actually do it was there.
Somehow I managed to get everything aligned and pressed together which felt like an achievement after so much torture. But then I realized I still needed to build the drives…

It’s amazing how the little steps of diy stack up if you think of all the separate little actions we have to take to tear apart, or build something…

I’m deep in that rabbit hole of minutia right now…

So this is where the rabbit took me this morning.

Took the old clamps out to put on the proper clamps.
These still have oversized holes, so I had to get extra little aluminum spacers.

Then I cleaned up the pinions with a toothbrush, alcohol, and tiny Qtips.

Right after that, I noticed one of the tires had deflated.
Hoping it’s the valve, and not the tube…

And since I am here I am slapping new MBS bearings, and official MBS spacers in here.

Then I was all, cool. Let’s start assembly…

And I had to pull out the Flux to have a visual reference.

I should have watched the assembly video.
Because I got here and forgot I had not greased, or bolted the lid…

Seems right I would forget, since I have only done this 5 or 6 times…

So I plop it open.

Which is kinda good, because I remembered there are a couple tiny spots of possible water ingress I want to cover up…

And I was not really sure what to use for that.

So I grabbed the Butyl Tape out. And smashed some in there.

I wonder if that will be ok, or if it will come loose and fuck everything up…
We shall see!!!

That is as far as I got…

Does anybody know where I put the hardware for these drives??

I don’t.
DIY is a disease!

Said hardware was in fact directly in front of me…

After solving the mistery of the missing/invisible hardware I charged forward and got on to assembly.

I think I say this everytime I do this. But I really love putting these NewBee drives together.
Such a clever set up and it comes together so nicel

Getting the motors lined up is a bit deal to me.

And there it is. The drive is back and sounds and feels nice and smooth.

The abs sheet I used to cover the cables keeps peeling up on the left side where the cables come out…

I have redone the 3M tape a couple times and it holds up for a while but eventually peels some…

So I need to add a couple more bolts.

So I was going to peel back and add a couple more inserts up front…

When I did peel it back I saw I had the two inserts on place already. And had forgotten to drill the ABS and put in bolts.

So I just had to drill the ABS.

I think it’s the first time I find a surprise that saves me steps.

So I start bolting it up.

And believe it or not.

On the last bolt I needed I could not find the right length.

The last fucking bolt.

So here I am. Last step.
Cutting a bolt to length.

I should get a plaque, for most bolt cutting fool out there…

And then I took it out to my gravel road for some pictures!!!

No real riding to let the loctite cure.

But I am stoked to get it back.

Next up I need to build the battery for the Demonseed to get that back to work.

Before it gets to be too far, I need to jump back in time a few weeks that I did some heavy duty tinkering…

It was the 4th of July.
And it was insane hot out. And we were going on Vacation soon, so I wanted to get some stuff done…

The main goal was to get a Unity in the Flux, to replace the DV6P that was having the remote disconnect during rides. And, I didn’t have the patience to fuck with it anymore and trouble shoot.

It’s amazing over the years how many of my parts “upgrades” ended up being fools errands…

So to fix the Flux we started with the Demonseed.

I have been meaning to take it apart, because I want to finish the 12s3p P42A pack I am building for it.

But for now I was stealing the Unity.

I did something pretty clever here, when I taped the battery to the deck.

I used an extra layer of heat shrink, so to unmount the pack l, I can cut the outer layer, and remove the pack easily.
And then fight with the 3m tape.

So up on the garage wall goes half the Demonseed.

This has a 10s4p 30Q pack I had built. With a dumb BMS.
I was hoping I might be able to salvage it, and was going to wire up a smart BMS.

But nah!!! 30Q don’t play that…

Right at the end I found a P group off… So down in sub garage with the other dead batteries it goes.

I really need to go make a recycling run, and need to try to sort that out at the local Lowes.

So onto the bench comes the Flux.
El Favorito!!!

I feel like I was just in here…

After taking this enclosure off a 100 times I finally pulled off an insert.

I love this Flux deck and Enclosure combo. Such a solid set up.

Then I had to undo my little rats nest and then 50ft of tape I have in there.

And there the DV6P goes…off to a brave young soul, with patience to troubleshoot…

I would not want my unique experience here to dissuade anyone from using Maker X stuff…

I’m sure I will buy an ESC from them again.

I just hate weird ghost in the shell stuff…
And I don’t have the patience to troubleshoot…
I had done some. Had already been in the enclosure.
So enough was enough.

I am not trying to push more than 95 motor amps, (set to 90)
So the Unity seems like a reliable choice.

Off course the freaking connectors on the Unity were wrong and I had to get to soldering.

This was a funny moment.
I wanted to match the motors 5mm bullets, and actually did not have any… So I had to do some unsoldering to salvage a set…

Sometimes hoarding doesn’t pay…

Not overly proud of the soldering here… But it got put together anyways…

Tiny rabbit hole…

The Flux set came with a nice power button…

When I moved the Unity from there I stole the nice power button for the Llama.

So had to go back to the smaller Unity button.

But the hole was too big.
So I had to slap a little sheet of abs on there.

The button is slightly recessed, looks legit.

Then it’s on to the rats nest…

The Unity is held in place with thermal paste, and a zip tie on top, and a couple spots of hot glue.

I know people can make this stuff look neat and pretty, and I commend and admire them.

But I cannot…

I just try to make sure shit stays still, and doesn’t rub together…

So much tapes…

Oh, I did run detection a couple times before taping everything… Doing that in the wrong order sucks.

And using that clamp on the axle there gave me a good way to hold it all in place when the motors spun up.

It feels good to have it back to work.

I love this Board, and was extra bummed it was being weird.

It ran great.
90 amps seems like plenty of power with the throttle curve at 30…
Actually freaked me out a couple times…

The motors are not nearly as loud as with the DV6P…
That shit was horrible.

But they still have some weird resonance and seem louder than most of my other motors!!!

I loaded the boys and the PXVX up for a playground trip.

I rode the Pint some!

I rode the Gravel Flux a bunch.

The boys rode the Gravel Flux!!!

A good time was had by all.

I have had a collection of bad packs inside a 50 gallon drum in the sub garage now for some time.

Part of me always wanted to salvage some of the cells.

And most of me knows that is a stupid amount of work…

I have been pondering taking them to lowes.

I actually saw the set up today…

I called a buddy that has taken cells from me before and is wanting to build an ebike pack…

So he came over and took it all!!!

Bombs Away!!!

Crap ton of 30Qs…

Glad to get rid of them.

Happy they may see some use.

I still need to take a couple boards apart and decommission their packs…

So…

Does esk8 change the very fabric of time and space?!?

Something weird happened this morning.

I had to take my car in for an oil change.

The drive there was only 2 miles.

But the ride back took 7.5 miles…

So weird!

So.

Is it poetic justice, or plain stupidity?

Taking the mayden voyage of the fixed Gravel Boi in the rain?!?

I had to go pick my car up.
A storm had rolled through…
It was still sprinkling.
I could have had my wife drive me. But where is the fun in that.

So out we go on wet ground.

This is more what I had in mind when I think of being reasonable to take a board out in the rain.

Ground was wet… It was sprinkling some, steadily, but it was no longer raining hard.

This was nothing like the heavy rain I rode through when I killed it.

So it was fine.

And the board felt great.

Glad to have this one back too!!!

When I was rolling back on the Flux yesterday is when I first saw the City back in action.

They came back and, brushed, swept up, and scooped the excess gravel.

It is way, way, way less of a shit show now…

Gonna need those bigger MAD wheels now…
