I’d buy a unity. If it breaks, I have the original engineer at the shop.
With the potter tenka potting, even he couldn’t do shit

PS: with that said, I’ve never bought one and never intend to :joy:

Stormcore for life

Thank you everyone for posting!
I’m beginning to make sense out of all of this (what each ESC needs to control it) but will have more questions soon. :slightly_smiling_face:

There is a truly shocking lack of even the most basic documentation for so many of these things. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

I think the Flipsky budget 4.xx and 6.xx dual/single escs are way more often sold than we realize in our limited forum circle just because they are so cheap and people like to buy cheap.

IMO, you’re right.

Am I correct in saying that Flipsky 4.xx doesn’t support use of an off/on button? Or does it use some non-obvious connections on a header?

I didn’t see anything in the pinout that screamed “I’m the button connection”. I was going to post this as a separate question but thought I’d toss it in now for the heck of it.

I goofed, 4.20 supports a button switch.

The new 4.20 does have a button. I think the old ones had too. As minimum on the dual units.

its always on, you use an antispark switch with it

But there is a button shown in the link above and a “Smart Switch” header that only connects to the button LEDs (no button control) and a “Pro Switch” header that connects to the button.

The button may override the auto turn on and off?

Or are you saying that the Pro Switch button turns the internal AS switch on/off and not the other parts of the ESC?

Huh? What the heck was I looking at before? Thanks!
Did you notice that the button only has the LED(s) connected in the photos though? The header for the switch contacts is unconnected.

Ahh….wait…Smart Switch is the LED connected only and Pro Switch connects the switch contacts. So I guess Smart Switch is roll-to-start with auto turn-off and Pro Switch uses the button for on (and maybe off)?

And that means….?

If you are talking about the number of posts in the last year NEOBOX might be the winner.

Oups :astonished:
Thanks, I’ll edit that

IMO the most common used ESC these days are

  1. unity/xenith - im grouping these together as they are functionally the same.

  2. stormcore 60D/60D+/100D/100D+ - again grouped together as they are very similar and together acount for a large number of higher end diy and prebuilt boards.

  3. vesc mk4/5/6 - these are not used as often in new builds due to the cost but there is still a lot of them out there in older boards.

  4. VESC hd60T/hd75T - These are default option in most new trampa boards however they dont seem to be as common in DIY.

  5. Spintend - seem to be the best budget option for 12s-16s.

  6. FSESCx.x - seem to be a common budget option however there are a few variations of the design and they dont have a great track record of being reliable. I think many people start here before witching to a better known hardware 2 months later when it fails on them.

If your trying to build compatible parts I would guess that unity/xenith and stormcore variants together currently account for ~80% of DIY builds. This is ideal as both designs are very similar in both functional design and mechanical design. the only real difference is that the stormcore has RGB switch where the unity only has single color. they are also used it many prebuilt options meaning there’s a fair few out in the wild.

Whilst both VESC offerings are being used in many boards, I would guess that most people buying a trampa complete are less inclined to do any electronics modifications or fit “aftermarket” hardware.

I wouldn’t be so sure this number is that high.
While I agree from the forum/Facebook community it might look like that, but
I for example can say that I do not know anybody running a unity/xenith or stormcore in a DIY build in Russia.
I also don’t think that every DIYer is somewhere discussing/posting their builts.
My guess would be that we know only a small percentage of all DIY builds, so it’s really hard to tell a number without knowing the sale figures from each company.

What are people in russia using? and what type of builds are those usually?

Flipsky was big in the past.
Now spintend is getting more attention, but not sure how they are going with their sales after they did rise up the price.
There is also a number of Trampa vescs and hds mainly in mountainboards. Not really that much but from time to time there are. There also some who bought Trampa complete boards, so they just come with the Vescs.

The builds I have seen so far are in a big range from cruiser (with hubs), longboards, to carver kaly style till full mtbs.

That’s an interesting question :upside_down_face:

Since this forum might be a kind of representative sample of customers, how about a poll with the top 7 of the above named ESC? Like „Which of these ESCs are inside your board?”

Would do this myself but I’m still at work

In my area, its all Unity/Zenith/Stormcore. Lots of old flipsky customers who wised up
