Moe wheels arrived. Yay! I ordered last Wednesday and they arrived today, i.e. in 6 days from the USA to the Czech Republic. That’s a great delivery time. Thanks @MoeStooge for getting them shipped out so quickly.
Now, these wheels are an absolute monstrosity. They make all wheels that I have look like dwarves. Including AT pneu wheels that is. Here they are side by side with my Trampa hubs + Metroboard 155mm pneu:
I couldn’t wait to test them out so I at least quickly swapped the front wheels and went for a short ride. Here are my initial impressions.
The feel is very similar to pneumatics. The comfort is about the same. I went over some interlocking pavement and the ride was very smooth. On the markings for blind people they actually feel even better than pneumatics, probably thanks to the very wide profile.
Consumption seems to have gone slightly up, but only slightly. I averaged 20 Wh/km on very cautious riding (the roads are frozen so no crazy stuff). With pneus, I would have been around 18 Wh/km.
One annoyance is that the wheels like to send little rocks flying. That happened a lot during the test ride. I was glad for my glasses.
Other than that I do like the wheels. I think I’ll keep them on for my daily commuting. Obviously they are primarily designed for racing. I should be able to test them out on a short track in February if I can get the drivetrain sorted out until then. I can print some pulleys for them but I’m afraid I won’t be able to fit them on my rear axles. This is my current situation there.
Conveniently though, @Savage1 might let me test his new TKP trucks if I behave myself. And those have much longer hangers, which should help a lot.
