Let there be ESK8 lights

An old car jump booster/powerbank.
It has a DC port to output 9, 12 or 19v

Found my answer.

Guess I’ll grab a converter and up the voltage at the same time. That’ll bring down the amps

That may not, because many LEDs are current-based and more voltage doesn’t help

They’re the 9-30v kind

I’ll get a link

In any case, the converter I ordered can go to 12a
I just don’t want the 14000 mah powerbank to die too quickly. It’s for the possibility of doing night rides with my monster build while still being able to remove them

I have a small buck converter in the electronics box for the tail light with a switch. For the headlight I am using a larger buck, waterproof and a switch.

Fuuuuuuuuuck… My plan just went down the drain…

Everything can fit…except the plugs on the power bank

So…for anyone curious…probably just me…

Found out my powerbank uses a 3s LiPo

Wtf haha I have to say, I haven’t seen that one before. Usually they’re like custom sized 1s or 2s lipos haha

The ones that can be used as a jump starter are pretty much all 3s RC lipos or other high-C-rating cells inside, because they have to be able to supply the several-hundred-amp cranking current to start a car.

Looks like that one doesn’t even have the usual protection feature of a set of fets between the battery and the high-discharge output to prevent inadvertent high-output events.

@MysticalDork From what I could find with the id code on top, it doesnt make sense to me.
It would be a unbranded venom fly 3s 30C

What doesn’t make sense is the claim was can jumpstart a truck. That’s 1000amps peak. My wife’s V6 4WD SUV is 800amps to jumpstart.
Was this a ticking bomb?

Probably, yes. These jumpstarter packs run right at the bleeding edge of the cells’ capabilities, and if you use them for jumpstarting a lot, I would expect most to get angry/puffy/dead very quickly.

Okay well I already told my wife it was dangerous when I figured I needed to dismantle it to use it
So it has been repurposed

Curious what kind of run time you get on 32Wh

Probably not much

But I’ll eventually give it something juicier.
This was just a proof of concept to the image I had in my head

Now that I look at it, it kinda reminds me of commercial emergency lights with integrated APC systems :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

If you really want something small/light that can both reliably start a vehicle and live through the experience multiple times, the best bet is to use a much smaller battery (a couple 18650s would do) to supply the energy, and a handful of good-sized supercaps to supply the momentary handful of kilowatts.

Lipo packs are just cheaper and simpler.

Basically…take a kwelds system and add jumpers?

Pretty much, yeah. Just add a “jumpstart” feature to the firmware that will basically dump the whole bank, and you’re golden. (Not sure the actual capacity of the Kweld’s bank… Might need more caps in parallel depending on the car.)

Might just have me an argument to finally get to buy one :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I’ve seen a couple videos on youtube of a guy that made a supercap car starter, with a hand crank generator to charge it. Spend a few minutes of muscle power and you can start a car even without any onboard energy storage.

I use these lights on the top of my other boards with a vendors 3d printed setup here but had issues with the angles of my mtb so I found the handlebar versions for sale on ebay. They slide on and off with a latching clip that has held up extremely well.

They came with some free clip on red led light which was cool I guess. Then I realized I could use it as a cable guide in the rear as well.

Safety first!

Yes I ordered another.
