LACROIX Stormcore ESC and iOS app info

This might be a stupid idea, but would putting some thermal insulation over this diode work?

It might work both ways, but I think it would get even worse. Because the heat transfers through pcb. With the insulation the diode would probably get even warmer. It would have a nice cozy blanket over it.

Hey all,

Extremely long thread so I apologize if this has been brought up, I’m new to the esk8 world. At the moment, there are a small number of us who are soon to receive some of the first Lacroix boards that ship with a Stormcore. However with the Hoyt Puck upgrade (no battery monitor), and being Android users, we have no accurate battery monitor that I’m aware of. I’ve been told the Unity app doesn’t work with the Stormcore, and even if you can get it to work it’s not recommended, same with something called ā€œmetrā€.

If the Stormcore app for Android users is not out until 2021, how are we to properly monitor battery level while riding/charging? Is there any possibility of an Android ā€œpre-appā€ that just shows voltage, and does nothing else? We need a reasonable way to take care of our battery…

I’m not a DIY guy, and do not have the necessary skills/tools to solder together a voltmeter, and this is very clunky while riding, I wouldn’t consider this a reasonable expectation for new Lacroix customers in this situation.

It is standard to have some way to monitor battery level on any electric vehicle, let alone high end ones like the Lacroix boards. I have tried to find out as much information as possible, but I’m sure some of it goes over my head, and there’s probably something I’m missing, so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

The power switch indicates SOC. Otherwise get metr Pro.

Thanks, I had heard the power switch shows a general indicator, but nothing truly accurate, and that metr isn’t recommended - open to more information on this if you believe it’s fine, most of the posts about it in the Lacroix group just talk about problems with it.

It would be preferable to get an actual voltage reading/% to properly care for the battery, rather than guessing based on what colour a light is.

Genuinely interested in the reasoning behind this? Metr Pro provides some of the best metrics in the business.

Use the vesctool app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=vedder.vesctool

The apk is available on the girhub also

Add a smart LLT bms to your battery pack build and never look back. It’s Bluetooth and you can connect directly to your battery for 0.001 voltage accuracy

That would be a good solution for the average diyer in here.
But idk how much he’s willing to dig into his brand new Lacroix board to do a bms swap Lol

I think there’s a smart bms in there… cant remember the app name though

If there is, xiaoxiang app can connect to it

Thanks everyone for the replies, I apologize for my ignorance, I’ve been learning slowly but unfortunately for me I’ve never really stepped into the DIY world and I wouldn’t be comfortable messing with electronics or my board, nor do I have the tools to do so.

I’ll take a look at any links/apps in the morning (Australia, getting late), and endeavour to provide more information on the BMS/Metr stuff. Truly appreciate all the helpful people here, night all.

I think meTr is your best bet. All you’d need to do is plug it in. Especially seeing that you said you don’t want to solder or anything like that.

C’mon people, he said he didn’t wanna diy and you suggest installing a smart bms?? :joy:

Other options are trying the Vesc tool app like @Blasto mentioned, or attempting the LTT bms one. You gotta find the right version though otherwise it just crashes

That can only be achieved by trial and error.

Do you ever buy an esk8 or a part and expect it to be maintenance free forever? Gotta start someday

True but he did specifically mention it lol

And yes, thanks to you my app works, most of the time as opposed to zero percent of the time haha

My vote is just download the vesc app on Android. There’s already Bluetooth module in the storm core so no need to get a metr too if it’s general metrics all you want

Hey guys, hope you’re all well and safe.

So don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-DIY and fully understand I’ll have plenty of maintenance to do, but being new to esk8 and having spent quite a lot on this board I wouldn’t be comfortable messing with it right off the bat. I was hoping for a very simple solution, purely battery (voltage or %, I understand voltage is easier). With the Stormcore app for Android out in 2021, and the beta likely sooner, a temporary solution is fine, even ideal.

Two main recommendations stick out so far - the Vesc app, and the xiaoxiang app, is either of these more user friendly/safer/better etc.?

Cheers!

  1. download the vesc app
  2. install the vesc app.
  3. power up stormcore
  4. open vesc app
  5. scan for bluetooth devices in vesc app.
  6. connect to stormcore

pretty non-invasive and doesn’t require much DIY skill. Or any DIY skill at all.

Cheers

TLDR what about the stormcore app?

Ok I did read. Vesc app seems to be the way forward :joy:
