this is a interesting and timely question as I was just pondering this.
it seems like it was just yesterday on an early spring day there were 11 running set ups that needed zero fucking with…
upgrades in mind. but all of them fine.
I have 5 boards, but as for working birds I’m down to 2 and 1 isn’t mine, and the other is an evolve
I keep pushing my hardware too hard, riding in the rain and messing up soldering a remote together. All I’ve managed to squeeze out is a rebuild and an almost complete board missing a VESC.
I really need to learn more and stop blowing things up.
havent said anything but i want to try being helpful
i was in the exact same position you are in a couple years back. i loved building and was convinced that i could do what i love and make profit. luckily i didnt pursue that.
recently ive started building for a couple local people (batteries and sometimes boards) i make sure beforehand that they know it wont be as professional as a lacroix or bioboard and always offer to fix up any work that i may have messed up.
now im more cautious and im looking into the legal aspect about whether if my work messes up and they get injured to what extent i am liable.
you dont realise how often issues crop up. currently i wont sell outside my local area as this way even when simple issues crop up i can fix them - most people have no idea about esk8 - they will change their vesc settings by mistake and plug lights into any random port etc…
people here arent trying to say dont do it cause its more business for them.
they are telling you not to do it cause you will find yourself in a bad situation.
the mentality of let him try and if he fails he will stop doesnt work here.
on my first board in the middle of a ride it cut out - i fell off and hurt myself (luckily not to bad)
if that happened to a customer and they decide to sue you your screwed.
your playing with lives here and you have to be careful.
for your sake please heed everyone’s advice
very few people have a personal issue with you and the rest are really just trying to be helpful
sorry for rambling
last thing:
when you work:
take pictures of everything and document everything
also be honest and make sure the buyer knows what hes getting into
issues WILL crop up and make sure the buyer knows that.
sorry for the long post and good luck with your endeavour
Building boards for others before you’ve had a board of your own work flawlessly for 1000+ miles really is inconsiderate and potentially outright dumb. Especially random people off reddit.
On the other hand, I guess I see myself as an exception to that rule. Because I read this forum every single day, I have a pretty good understanding of all the ways something can go wrong, and what flaws / compromises different parts have. Although I try to do things differently with my personal boards to try new techniques and part combinations, the boards I build for others I do with tried and tested parts and methods, and I’m happy to say they haven’t seen any massive failures.
But there’s still plenty of little failures like pulleys seizing, trucks bending, motors failing, etc. So even I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing 1-off commissions for random people online. A single model of a board that I could test for a while, sure, but not customs. Not even LHB does customs anymore.
So – can it be done? Kinda, I guess. Should it? NO.
