and that’s where i got them from
Instead of first, second and third place have a few categories like the ones mentioned already in this thread and have 1 winner for each category.
Yeah, nine people to pool out gifts to is a lot.
IMO i think categories would be great. I have thought about this a lot and my categories would be:
Best Last Mile - Super portable PEV’s that can be easily carried (think short boards and onewheels).
Best Street - Show style category for the thane lovers among us.
Best Carver - Show category for those who love to look flash during their comfy urban cruse.
Best eMTB - Ultimate off-road for those who want to go anywhere. Practicality over looks, the muddier the better.
Finally . . .
ULTIMATE DIY MASTER - This ones a little different. This is for the scratch builders and the innovators that are pushing the hobby forward. It would be judged on the DIY spirit shown in the build and The winner could be from any of the above 4 categories.
Feel like most of this years builds can be clearly put into one of these categories.
I think anything more than 3 categories would make the prizes much worse. These builds take a fuck ton of money and time. The greatest builders deserve a very decent prize. Here’s what I think should be the categories in order of prize value.
- Overall best build
- Most innovative build
- Most + Least Stealthy
Edit: The same board should be able to win multiple categories but should only get one set of prizes from the “highest” category they win.
For example. If Board A wins #1 and #2 they should get the prize for #1 and 2nd place for #2 gets the prize for #2 and so on.
Definitely need a general “best build” category; it’s a prestige title that shoudn’t be thrown away!
If it was my choice to make, the 3 categories would be
- BOTY (Build Of The Year! Overall best build)
- Best stealth build
- Best DIY build
Personally I don’t think urethane and pneumatic categories should be split, because as others have said, wheels can often be swapped, any pretty much any board can be skinned, blinged out with lights, or what not. New tech like airless wheels would blur the lines even more. Mountainboards are also rarely that special I think, unless a lot of work has gone into differentiating them, in which case they would be good candidates for the DIY category I think.
Fully waterproof board? could be cool to go wading through a swamp on a skateboard
not sure what category it would go in
def in for breaking up into categories but still like the idea of a end all be all BOTY.
My thoughts are similar to others expressed:
1.) board of the year
2.) most innovative
3.) best for offroad
4.) best for street
“for” in the last two I think is important. B/c it allows the community to decide what they feel each board is capable of as part of the nomination.
Also echoing others that we should prob keep it to 3 to 5 categories max.
I’d go for
1 - Street (thane and carvers)
2 - Off Road
3 - Most innovative.
what about a category for best build thread and funniest build thread and most imformative build thread
not all categories need prizes maybe just prizes to the best build top 3
I like the idea of a no prize but honorable mention category for sure
yeah i thought its better that the top builds get big prizes and others get an honorable mention and the chance for them to have a title change
This is good. I agree
Yesss… I get to be a vendor for next year
Belt drivessss
Also whilst i think about it, IMO voting results should not be shown whilst voting is open. I Think many peoples votes are influenced by other votes (both consciously and unconsciously when we can see the results.
I’m going to push for this if I’m part of the BOTY 2021 crew.
Just another thought (which may have come up)…
I think the Build of the Year should be voted on after the category winners have been finalized. We simply vote on which of the category winners we feel is the overall winner.
I also like the idea of only three or four categories with one of them being a “Wild Card” category for builds that don’t really fit the other conventional categories. I think it might help promote more out of the box thinking and unique ideas. And one overall BOTY award between the category winners.
Also, how about a community designed trophy that could be 3D printed or something. Maybe even a multi part printed trophy where different people “donate” different colored parts they print and one person assembles or glues them together? Might be more trouble than it’s worth, but I think it would be an interesting way to embody the community spirit of the forum into something truly unique that you could display on the mantle. Or on the front of your board.
Or we just get @SeanHacker to print them, so we know that they’ll come out perfect.
