Help me out with this guys… What gear ratios are you guys looking for in the Avio Drive?
- 3.0 - 3.3
- 3.3 - 3.5
- 3.5 - 3.7
- 3.7 - 4.0
- More than 4.0

Added a touch more grease after this but here was the first ride on Avio.
When you are coming to the end if the braking, are you full brakes? Will help me decide whether to go 190 or 220
Love the sound
Nah i was pretty easy on the brakes there
So the braking torque is still quite strong with the 220s?
Yeah I havent had any problems while running -60. I’m also pretty light though at 150lb
Hmm. I guess the only way for me to really know is to try it… i might put 190s on the spur drive just to be safe and when the herringbones come with the higher ratio i will see how I feel.
Using my favorite simple calculator at http://toddy616.blogspot.com/2013/07/electric-skateboard-calculator.html
with 142mm wheel as you measured above, at 12s, with 200kv and 85% efficiency:
ratio | weighted | unweighted |
---|---|---|
4.0 | 31 | 37 |
3.75 | 33.9 | 39.9 |
3.5 | 35.9 | 42.2 |
3.3 | 38.0 | 44.8 |
3.0 | 41.9 | 49.2 |
I should have used 200kv motors lol.
For me 170kv motor, it’s
ratio | weighted | unweighted |
---|---|---|
3.75 | 28.5 | 33.5 |
3.5 | 30.5 | 35.9 |
3.3 | 32.8 | 38.6 |
3.0 | 35.6 | 41.9 |
From above it looks like I should move up to 200kv and go 3.75. 3.5 seems like it might work for me too with 170kv, and allow swapping to 200kv but I probably won’t like the torque.
BTW discourse has markdown/org-mode tables wow.
Y’all voting for 3.0-3.3, you nuts. I wouldn’t mind having it in my parts box though.
Holy shit it sounds just like that IRL. I was bracing!
haha!
Update: We actually have about 10 sets of herringbone gears in stock 13:51 for those who have purchased the Avio AT Gear drive MK1. We’re holding on to them right now because I’d like to get some mileage on them before releasing them for sale.
I almost ran over a rooster. Recording some cool sound comparison vids now
I…
This is… I hear leaf crunches only. Saying this is quiet is an understatement, I am grinning from ear to ear testing it just now.
It might just be quieter than hubs , but it is without a doubt quieter than any belt drive.
I have the footage; will be working on the edit tonight and hopefully have it uploaded tomorrow afternoon!
Want.
Any idea on herringbone gears $ yet?
Wondering what to do with the original virgin gears!
Sorry, no idea yet. ):
We are still deciding between alu or POM gears. What do you guys think/want?
Alu gears are slightly louder, but it’ll be alot cheaper for us to produce. POM gears are lighter and quieter, but more expensive for us to produce and might be cost prohibitive for most.
It’s also very hard for us to produce 2 different kinds due to the MOQ and economies of scale.
Not sure, have you considered a Alu motor gear and Pom wheel gear? Idea being silence advantage on lesser stressed wheel gear. MOQ problem understand but maybe this alu/Pom split satisfies MOQ
That is one of the 2 options, haha.
Option 1: alu pinion, POM wheel gear.
Option 2: alu pinion, ALU wheel gear.
