Hardwired remotes?

Idk man i’m pretty dumb myself and I like looking cool

wire thingys ≠ cool

I personally do not feel like I am being pitched anything other than an invite to a discussion on an online forum about electric skateboards.

I think the tech addiction is a small but entirely valid point to consider that has been turned into a make-or-break argument in this case.

Look at the auto industry adding touchscreen controls to everything. It is 100% a “look, it’s tech, we’re cool” thing because all of the cars are moving towards the fugly integrated tablet dash. No one wants to dig through soft interfaces with zero haptic feedback to turn the AC on. Rules are in place and set to go into effect in 2026 in some areas actually limiting what functions can be made accessible solely through touch interface.

Your example with cars is a good and valid one.

To me this thread has felt wrong, mostly because @theboardgarage isn’t here saying his onewheel doesn’t need a remote

But if it did, it would be a wired remote

I love you goobers regardless

Telephone cord. It’s designed for thousands of stretching/flexing/retracting events while maintaining signal integrity and rejecting interference.

I have a retractable charging cord adapter in my car. Honestly pretty impressed by it’s functionality.

Yes and definitely designed as a safety critical part

Wired remotes make a lot of sense, but I personally am pretty sure I would break a wired remote quicker than the wireless remotes.

I have eaten shit many times and I can imagine that a wired connection probably wouldn’t have survived some of those crashes.

All of my remote issues have been potentiometer related, rather than connection related.

Here’s an interesting approach from an early esk8 maker - foot pedals - no remote needed!

Personally, I would never consider a wired remote for my esk8. Not for any electrical/RF reasons, but purely for mechanical/ergonomic reasons.

What happens if my cord comes unplugged? - ded
What happens if I step on the cable exit and snap it off? - ded
What happens if the cord gets snagged by something while riding? - ded
What happens if I fall off my board and in my panic, forget to let go of the remote? - ded
What happens if I need to bail, but the cord gets tangled in my legs as I’m stepping off? - ded
What happens if I need to bail, but the cord gets tangled in the drivetrain once I let go of it? - ded
What happens if I am storing my board, it falls over onto the cord exit and damages it? - ded

What happens if my remote/cord gets damaged during the ride somehow, and I need to swap it out for a spare? Best case, the spare can be plugged directly in, but that plug now has to be weatherproof, dust proof, and extremely robust to avoid accidentally coming unplugged. Worst case, I have to open the board to re-make connections inside, and disassemble the cord from whatever strain-relief/seal its routed through. In short… - ded

I could go on. And I know, I know, these are largely edge-case things. But as product designers (or DIY solutions designers, whatever) we have to think about the edge cases that will inevitably crop up over dozens, hundreds, or thousands of hours of use.

For an e-bike or scooter, a wired throttle is a no-brainer, because it becomes fully integrated into the existing frame/handlebars of the vehicle. The frame both protects the wire, and eliminates the possibility of any of the ergonomic/mechanical challenges I outlined above. With an esk8, you’re talking about a wire freely floating in space, at least 4ft long. That’s a very different equation from wire routed through the chassis of an ebike, and poses very different challenges.

Now, with something like @Venom121212’s brake lever + throttle gizmo, it makes more sense. If you are already dealing with a brake wire, then it changes the equation in favor of adding the throttle there as well.

Thank you for writing all the thoughts I had that I was to lazy to type myself

Fair enough lmao

Before seeing this thread I woulda thought everyone knew about most of the facts in your list which is why there are no more wired remotes.

Seemed painfully obvious to me :man_shrugging:

Also I did make many of the same points just not in such detail

And based on that assumption, you have been arguing with @tomiboi for literally 7 hours :kissing_heart:

Sorry I’m just so hopelessly addicted to technology

Flashback to me riding through the woods on that 3 wheeled monstrosity and doing exactly what you said:
Snagging the wire on a low branch and yeeting it out of my hand.

That was actually half of what lead me to finding the old esk8 forum.

Falling from that must have looked really uncool so now I understand Tommy’s point

That fall scored me @Evwan’s Dad :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I agree with Benji.

On the puck radio is flawless nonsense, I would like to add that i can make puck disconnect on many boards… wrap the puck in your hand and hold it against your body… this disconnects 9 times out of 10 for me.
