Race UPDATE

Track was awesome, but personally speaking I didn’t feel fast on it. It was meant to be a fast track, with a long straightaway and some very high speed corners. I wasn’t slow by any means but I didn’t feel like I was moving fast or pushing my limits. I just wasn’t feeling it this week. An off day.

The track started with a straightaway with a very slight right handed turn, more like a right handed curve. Then you slowed down and made a tight Left U turn which flowed into a double S turn. The S turns where wider then usual, which meant you could take them with a higher speed. Then you had one long and fast corner that brought you back to the straightaway.

The straightaway was long and fast, I’d say around 30-35mph top speed.

I learned I need to up my high speed brakes, I had trouble with going from high speed to low speed on this track right off the straightaway.

Let me tell you though, @fessyfoo was killing it. He hopped on Brandon’s board for the first time (His new Redember on 3links ) and SOARED. It was crazy.

Brandon ate crap on the SRB, I’m not sure exactly what happened since I wasn’t near it but maybe @fessyfoo knows more.

Oh and my tires got destroyed. I swapped new ones on in the morning since mine were close to showing threads. A couple laps into the track I came off and checked my tires and the middle line had tons of rips in them. These are a known issue on a few bad batches of Metro 155’s. I’m not totally sure why it happens, but from what I saw it didn’t really affect the ride feel, mostly just me mentally being scared. I need to buy the right sized socket to swap the tires out, so I guess it’s Science time until the socket comes!

That’s all for this weeks Racing Update! Photos coming soon

WEEKLY RACE UPDATE BROUGHT TO YOU BY DASH THE DUMBY

The track setup this week was AWESOME! I loved the track, it was challenging but in different ways then it normally is. It was more designed/based off of the Apple Valley Speedway Track, which is a very fast track, different from what we normally ride. Usually our tracks are slow and technical, but Apple Valley and this weeks track were more speed based, with a hint of technical parts.

It was shaped like this (image below) The straightaway was HUGE, I could feel my board topping out on it, which means someone geared higher would probably get 36ish mph before needing to slam the brakes for the M style turn.

Image

Everyone took the M turn slow because most people were still slowing down from the straightaway (myself included) which meant it was slow for the first part of the M and then the pace picked back up for the second part.

Once you exited the M turn it was a slight left side curve at high speed, then you tapped the brakes and made a 70ish degree right hand turn which flowed into left turn that straightened you back out.

After that you hit a slow U turn and turned the jets on for the straightaway!

I felt surprisingly fast on my board, but also felt like my board was limiting me a bit. I need stronger brakes since my high speed brakes aren’t the greatest. I also need to be geared for a higher top speed. This is the first time I e felt like my board started to limit me, which in means I’ve improved over the past couple o months!

@fessyfoo took a hard fall, hope you are all good man :love_you_gesture:t3:

Ohhh yeah… and I beat the crap out of my Gen 2 3links  Neither Brandon, Mario, or Moe had ever seen this happen before, so I’m sending them up to Moe so he can see what went wrong and improve on them.

I’d like to say though, when this happened I was not affected and I was not hurt, I felt it happening a little earlier but I thought it was my tires. If someone were to feel this in normal riding I’m 99% sure you would take the board to the bench and see what was up, I didn’t since I was at Intro to Speed.

Luckily my new Gen3 3links came in last week so I put them on the board and gave everything a once over! Swapped a bearing or two along with a few other things. All in all it took me less then 3h’s to do an entire drivetrain swap, new bearings, new trucks front and back, programming on Vesc, along with adjusting bushings.

HOLY CRAP the new 3link bushings are surprisingly easy to adjust, I’d say as easy as the v2’s. AND you can adjust the motor mount angle without needing to re loctite!?!?? @MoeStooge

@fessyfoo took a hard hit, hope you are all good man.

I won’t have a race update next week, but I will after the Apple Valley race if everything goes well!

Zoomz To all!

thanks. I’m ok. turns out pushing 20% further accel on that straightaway means I slide out in the first turn of the W. :stuck_out_tongue: little to aggressive.

it was definitely a challenging course.

So in preparation for Apple Valley I have two issues…

  1. I have less then 20 Miles on the new 3links…
  2. The board is geared for a slow top speed

Number two will be fixed within the next week or two, but there’s a small chance we can fix it this week, bummed I’ll be limited to 38-40mph on this awesome track/event that @MoeStooge, @RipTideSports, and the many others who helped set it up. It’ll still be fun though, hell anything on an Esk8 is fun, even at slower speeds.

RACE UPDATE BROUGHT TO YOU BY DEEIF THE DUMBY

(DISCLAIMER: Holy Crap This is a Long piece of writing lol)

First off I’d like to send a huge GET WELL SOON FESS who dislocated his shoulder on Sunday (29th) at the track.

Second I’d like to give a big shoutout to @BenChieffen and @MoeStooge for setting up and bringing generators for the race!

So let’s start off with the track. It was different that’s for sure. I’m used to small, 20-30sec lap time tracks. This was super different, with lap times being 3x times that. I think my qualifying time was 1:42, with almost everyone being in between 1:42 and 1:46.

The track itself was interesting. Most of the corners were a good amount apart from each other, which meant you really had to accelerate coming out of them if you wanted to succeed. It was strewn with bumps which meant line mattered, something that I’m not used to having matter that much.

This also meant that I had to tighten my trucks up in order to not kill myself on the straightaway because of the bumps. So guess what I did? Yeah, that’s right, I loosened my bushings up :joy: I loosened my toeside bushings and then put the front bar to the middle setting and out the rear bar to the lowest setting. I can see myself easily doing 50mph on this angle setup, now I just need a board that will actually do 50mph

So back on topic… The track has a change in elevation throughout it, you accelerate up to the top of the hill on the straightaway, and then the rest of the track is all slightly down hill, which means a lot of the turns had camber going away from them which was super tricky to handle.

I’ll put an image below of what the track itself is shaped like.

So how we did the races was you got a free track time from 9-12 ish, but most people didn’t hit the track until 10ish from what I saw. Then you had a single lap (rolling start) qualifying time. This was one person on the track at a time.

Somehow I got the second fastest Esk8 qualifying time, which I was super excited about! Although, I think if Brandon didn’t fall he would’ve gotten faster qualifying time (almost guaranteed)

From there we were split up into 3 Esk8 classes.
Pro: Brandon + Mario
Semi-Pro: Me, @JaysTCB, @JeremyChavez, and @KfromtheBay
Novice: @BenChieffen and a Lacroix Dude

These were based off qualifying times, and even though Brandon didn’t have a time, we all knew he would only have a good matchup against Mario.

These ā€œHeat racesā€ were 1 lap, with a rolling start. The start was setup like shown

  1. 2

  2. 4

With 1 getting the inside. The 1 set the pace for the rolling start until Moe dropped the green flag which signaled the start o the race.

My Heat race was neck and neck, one screw up and the 3 other people would’ve blown passed you. I screwed up on one of the turns, taking it wide which let Jason pass me. Luckily I got right back on the throttle which put me right behind him. I thought all hope was losses until the very last corner (weirdly tricky) where Jason lost the rear for just a second, but that was enough for me to catch up. We were neck and neck passing the finish line, I think I only beat him out by a foot or two. With Jeremy and Kenny were right on our tails.

Fast forward to race numero dos, the main event. We decided to make it a two lap race, so that if you screwed up on the first lap you had a whole other lap to save yourself on.

It started off the same, same starting positions and everything. I’m not sure about everybody else, but I sure as hell know that all I was thinking was ā€œgive it your hardest, fastest, push the board to the limitsā€ for two laps straight.

This time I did something a little different though, I held the trigger for longer on the straightaway, which gave me a good 10-15 ft lead ahead of Jason. This helped a ton since I then had a tiny bit of wiggle room to screw up.

Jason was slowly creeping up on me, but I had just enough of a lead that in the end I came out on top.

This is the first time I’ve ever gotten an actual position in a race and the first time I beat a stooge board (although not by much)

I can’t wait to see what the future holds, I especially can’t wait to get a real raceboard going, built for one purpose, racing.

I seriously owe my love for Esk8 (specifically racing) to @MoeStooge and @Arzamenable. Moe’s always helped me out, on and off the track, and seeing him and his riders rip around the track inspires me to push my limits, to go past what I thought I could do.

Mike has helped by giving me advice, showing me what I can expect and what I need to focus on. He’s always pushing the limits, hell he’s building an 8 freaking motor board :exploding_head:

Now… Picture time
