I’ve got an old build that is running a single 6374 motor on a set of ronin trucks (184mm hanger I believe) and have been thinking of upgrading to a gear drive. The goal is primarily to improve braking but general improved performance and durability are always great too. Any thoughts or suggestions?
A gear drive upgrade can help braking in two ways:
- You can choose a high gear ratio when purchasing the drive, which helps tremendously with braking power
- You no longer have a belt that can slip and cause you to lose braking power.
A well tuned belt drive with the same drive ratio will brake just as well as a gear drive.
\(^0^)/
“well tuned” is far from gauranteed. This is the main reason why I prefer gear drives. Hate fiddling with belts.
One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.
I’m sure you’d prefer my belt setup over the Kaly V1 gear drive that’s been sitting under a blow torch for an hour.
The belt slippage is a big issue for me. Even after fiddling with the setup and having dual idlers I’ve never been able to get things as dialed in as I’d like.
I also have a dual idler setup (2wd) and have the same issue; after enough miles I get slippage. Only reason I havent switched that build to gear drives is that non exist for Surfrodz RKP.
I fucking knew someone was gonna bring that up lmao I have his dual idler belt drive
It’s unobtanium unfortunately
Oddly enough my 2wd setup (sans idlers) has no issues. My carving setup, Icarus deck, Ronin trucks and the single motor is my prefered board so I’m wanting to upgrade if possible. Since you can’t buy the right mm hangers for ronin trucks anymore I’d guess my options are limited.
Isn’t there a SR RKP clamp for moon drive too?
Yeah but not for urethane
Yes but it doesn’t support the wheel gear having a bearing. And I don’t think he sells the clamps any more. @pookybear might have a spare set though if you really wanna go that route. But yeah, for this AT drives only.
I dont get what ur saying but are you hardening them? I was thinking this was maybe a thread about making the gears stronger by hardening them or something
For best braking and durability+ you need to upgrade to hubs!
I like the simplicity of hubs but don’t think they work best for my specific build. I’m about 200 lbs and live in an area with a lot of hills. In attempts to minimize board weight I opted to go with a single motor.
I was referencing that they’re near impossible to take apart, or adjust. I’m binning these now, but had a long arduous attempt at getting anything apart at all.
Not a knock on gear drives writ large, but highlighting how particular implementations of anything can tank their inherent advantages.
Are there any gear drives that are well accepted in the community?
this one is bullet proof
Follow the instructions exactly and you shouldn’t have to touch these again until your motor breaks

any votes?
The 3DS isn’t 380 eur in any version. Cheapest 460 if you look now. (?)
