First esk8 Build!.. am I doing this right?

Hey all! I’m almost ready the pull the trigger and get all the parts to build my first esk8. I just want someone who knows what they’re doing to tell me I’m on the right track, here’s the parts list:

Deck + Enclosure: TB40 DECK V2 (and some M5 threaded inserts)
Motors: dual TB 6380 190kv motors + 16T 12mm Motor Pulleys
Trucks: TB 218mm trucks
ESC: MakerX Go-Foc DV6
Battery: Mboards 12s3p (BMS comes with the battery)
Wheels: Ownboard 7inch tire kit (comes with 66T pulleys and belts)
Controller: Flipsky VX2
Helmet: …a helmet
Other: loctite, screws etc.

I’m planning to CNC the motor mounts since there’s a workshop near me. I’ll probably CAD the mounts and clamps myself if I can’t find a model that exists.

And yeah this is the plan right now. Thoughts? Is there anything I’m missing or stuff worth pointing out?

I wouldn’t buy anything from TB…

Deck has carbon fiber in it - not great for remote signal, but some do better than others.
Enclosure material is not mentioned, but looks like ABS - not good.

15mm would be better.

Outdated by today’s standards, cast trucks with 8mm axles are pretty weak.
Plus you can’t mount them drop-thru on that deck.

Co-sign on the abs enclosure and cast trucks. However, if you’ve already purchased these parts, you can at least improve the enclosure with truck bedliner. That will make it plenty strong enough. This is the one you want:

You could also use the baseplates from the cast trucks and buy hangers from boardnamics which are milled precision parts and much stronger.

Also, I’d steer away from buying a wheel kit w belts. They likely won’t be the right size. You’re machining your own mounts and unless you use the same exact centre to centre measurements and same pulley sizes your belts likely won’t fit. Buy hubs and tires and then use a timing belt calculator to figure out the needed belt size once you have designed the mounts.

What are you general plans / use case for the board? That would help us recommend part alternatives.

+1 avoid the Torqueboards stuff, it’s outdated and their customer service past is… well, a thing you can read up on if curious

Their 6380s are quality modors tho to be fair but it’s a def a pretty big question if you’ll even get what you order lol

Had a friend buy 2 and they both broke within 100 miles. Wouldn’t call them “quality”

Yeah anything other than Flipsky and Reachers is a no-buy these days

That’s the exception tho not the rule. They’re battle hardened after all.

Well I opened them up and they most definitely were not.

Might’ve been a different batch than the ones you’ve seen tho

Yeah, I’d echo what others are saying about avoiding TB stuff. You can get almost everything you need from Boardnamics instead, much better stuff.

But you’ll need to source another deck/enclosure. I recommend tomiboi, or a deck of your choosing with an eboosted enclosure. If you’re on a budget you can get some decent wholesale decks from Skateshred.

Best of luck!

If you’re really on the carbon deck & enclosure kick, Boundmotor has a couple decent looking options.

This ^. I believe @Ac53n is currently selling one as well.

The tb40v2 is the only TB on his list I’d keep.
Pretty solid board with lots of reinforced composite layers. Enclosure is pretty meh, but not bad for abs, 5-6mm iirc.

Oh yeah having front teeth after eating pavement sounds like a good plan. Good to know the deck works for you!

Thanks for the info! Would the abs enclosure still be a problem if I’m not planning to do anything off-road?

bigger pulley = happier motor? Is 15mm just the standard motor pulley size people get?

Ohh I totally missed that, guess I’ll keep looking. Thanks!

The plan is to mainly use it to commute. But I’m also gonna beef it up slightly in case I want to go zoom from time to time. Nothing off-road though.

I’ve seen people call flipsky stuff shitsky . So I thought their stuff is bad quality, now I’m conflicted where I should get my stuff.

Oh wow this is so helpful :face_holding_back_tears:! I’ll def look into this.

Oooo right I definitely didn’t forget about that :smiling_face_with_tear:. Thanks for saving me from potentially going clinically insane.
