ESK8 Racing needs our help to grow

Its all a numbers game for them even if we look at the entire community of electric/downhill racers there just isn’t enough exposure for them to invest.

Hopefully we get there eventually as Red bull is definitely willing to invest in niche “sports” if the numbers are there.

Very busy with OSRR. I’ll catch up on this thread when I get this first beta round wrapped up.

Definitely interested in the topic at hand. I’m happy to design whatever is needed on the electronics side of things, power systems & battery solutions are next on my personal project list.

Understandably they don’t sell to individuals, only businesses. Brad, you should contact them if you haven’t already. In fact, all esk8 corporations reaching would benefit esk8 the most. This is a very interesting find!

Ummmm sir, NASCAR is all left hand turns. It’s Much more exhilarating to drive counter clockwise.

I saw that and I hope the rest of their claims are not bullshit!

Mulan reference?

Much less classy

They are making a lot of comparison claims with big improvements against a system that is already ~85% efficient in terms of (power out/power in).

They say simpler controller but add mechanical and electrical complexity to the system to manage the fields and by the number of firings to manage.

They just got their first round of vc funding at $4.5 million. Not a lot for what is advertising as game changing technology. They are worth watching but appear at a glance to be over selling.

Torque

Torque control yes. It is not apparent to me how they would get a significant peak torque increase unless they are comparing themselves with a motor/transmission combination.

Yes sir, you are right on that manner… Lets wait and see what they really got…

What really caught my attention was the power redundancy if it partially failed

I know this is dead but I just thought of a way to make the hot swappable battery packs for racing. Sorta stupid but a smarter person could obviously simplify and expand my idea. Here goes.

So almost all of us have enclosures on our boards. If you chopped just the very top of the enclosure (part facing concrete when riding) off in the spots your batteries were then used those little push down things that @Arzamenable used to use then you could do the following.

  1. Pop the enclosure by quickly pressing in the 4 buttons (5-10sec tops)
  2. Unplug the XT90 connector and pull your battery out (10-20 sec depending on Velcro strength/fumbling)
  3. Unzip bag and put battery in enclosure/plug connectors in (10 sec for bag and 10 for plugging in connector/positioning battery)
  4. Pop the enclosure back on and flip the board over (tops 20sec with lots of fumbling)

Bam, whole entire untrained battery swap in under 70sec for an untrained person. That means someone who has done it a couple of times could easily do it in 30-40 seconds.

Especially with using Lipo’s you can carry 2-5 in your bag and then if it’s a crazy long race someone could be at the halfway point where you swap bags for one with fully charged packs.

Open to changes, I really want Esk8 racing to grow and become a real sport/event.

I’ve got some other ideas but they are harder to explain…

Here’s one:

Building boards that are fully equipped for racing, but with the Battery Bay not having a battery in it, meaning someone could build a couple of these and just have other racers try them out with their own packs. This lets the owner of the boards make these “Race Cages” for around 800-1.2k-ish depending on the specs… Which if the owner was an Esk8 manufacturer/company like @Psychotiller or @longhairedboy These would be easy and cheap ways to show off their new tech/boards…

I’ll work on putting my two ideas into fusion (once I learn how) the two names are:

“E-Race Cages” (The second idea)
And
“Battery Bays” (First idea)

I’ve often wished for a hot-swap battery for eMTB. The ‘walk of shame’, carrying a dead eMTB down trails at a State park, is about as fun as it sounds.

For the 2020 racing sleds, my gut says we’re building two, identical completes for each pilot:

Each racing kit will feature “our own” (read: made with the community) urethane wheels (Labeda) and CNC pneumatic wheels for the Clever 6x2 tires (TBD) with electronics (ESC, PCB, BMS, etc.) by @jeffwuneo

Your idea will absolutely work; we had little choice but to carry spare batteries for Landwheel, Mellow, Boosted gen 1, etc.

Thanks for the insights. Here was another idea that wouldn’t be too hard to make…

For the battery bay it could be neodymium magnets right where the mini top hatch is. This would make it very easy to pop open and you would not have to fiddle with the way the bay was rotated or anything.

I might try and make an aluminum enclosure with a battery bay soon to try out.
