Dye-hard guide on wheels (How to dye wheels)

Will the black still yellow

Technically yes but the black dye traps so much light that you won’t be able to tell (if dyed properly of course)

Also black dye is often made with soot particles which will make it more resistant to UV (AFAIK)

I finally dyed the wheels. Rit all purpose did not work. It definitely made it darker but it took days of on and off heat. In the end i was able to find some rit synthetic. That worked great as you can see.

So I tried dyeing these rim protectors black.
Cotton/natural fabric dye. Recipe from post 1. After 30 minutes didn’t work at all. Left them soaking overnight - they turned yellow
Nice color, but doesn’t really match my build.
What works is permanent marker - they soak that black alcohol based ink really well.

So after contemplating on this yellow color for a bit I’ll probably just use a black marker.

I usually use the synthetic Rit

Synthetic, double the dye ratio, and add some dish soap.

This dyes most stubborn things

I dyed my TFL rim savers with synthetic Rit dye as well. I used graphite color for a nice black. Originally white. Took maybe 15-30 mins total.

That was for my old stock GT hub

Great result.

Kinda tempted to get some Rit synthetic, shipping price is brutal though.

I took out the marker ink core, painted in 2 layers, wiped with isopropanol, then lightly sanded and washed.
Kinda interesting that only one of these markers penetrates into polyurethane. The first one is stable and is absorbed pretty deep, the other 3 stay on the surface and can be cleaned off with isopropanol.
The color is meh, but close enough, only cost me a couple bucks.
