Dumbo RC Remote, the better mini remote?

May I introduce to you guys, the Dumbo RC remote?

This remote was used by my apprentice @kyume on his recent board build, and i’ve also tried it. It’s a really good trigger style remote, arguably better than the trusty mini remote from the early years.

It uses four AAs, so it runs on 2s, and has up to 4 different channels. For esk8 purposes, for PWM, we’ll just use channel 2.

I took apart the remote slightly to see if a remote case overhaul can be done, and it does look like it can. I’m just too dumb to be able to 3d model something out.

The top part of the remote is where the PCB is housed, and there’s an antenna (white wire) with a brass tube around the tip.

Front of the PCB. Top 2 buttons are for channels 3 and 4. The lights in the middle of them are battery % for the remote.

The three knobs below on the left are for channels that are unlikely to be used.

The two knobs on the right bottom are trims for Channel 2.

The part that connects to the potentiometer is just a 3 pin JST. So technically the shape can be somewhat like what i’m holding in the photo, of course adding some sort of way to charge a battery of sorts.

Since it’s running 2s, sourcing a 2s lipo and maybe having it charge USB C.. we looked for possible power sources and charging solutions.

We found this 2s USB C charge/balancer PCB. This could work and charge a 2s lipo.

Now a 2s lipo might end up being too fat or odd in shape. Perhaps wiring two 1s lipos in series would work also.

So far I only have the stock remote, nothing has been done yet, I might give the 2s lipo PCB thing a shot and try.

Now it’s where I’m calling for help. I want a remote that works, is reliable and very responsive, bonus if it’s affordable. The Dumbo RC remote is that remote, except its form factor is too big. If anyone is willing to model a remote shell, do give it a try.

I have been using these.

3 have been in service.

Signal seems perfect.

Trigger feels great to me.

I have deconstructed mine some…

Someone really needs to design a legit shell for this…

You don’t think you can charge a battery through the existing USB port?

I have been running one with a 1S battery. But I don’t think it’s charging.

The original usb port was designed to be used for power sources, rather than actually charging the batteries. The two ports on that side were mainly for sim rc, hence the design choice. We will have to source our own 2s balance charging usb board unfortunately.

You’re powering it with a 1s Lipo? How are you able to charge? Also does it work with 1s?

I am not able to charge… but it has been running fine with a 1S … voltage wise. It was fully charged when I put it in…

Just checked and it was down to 3.92.

I am going to figure out a way to get the battery to charge.

That’s so jank haha, but the one on the left is a good reference as to how small the form factor can get

Any way to figure out what the low voltage threshold is for this remote?

I played around with these today and added a 1S USB charger to see if I can run it and charge it…

So far it works fine…

it is very light and the form factor decently small.

I just needed to put a shell around the top…

I ran 2 separate Dumbo remotes today with the 1s battery.

It worked fine.

It’s pretty sketchy not really knowing my battery level though.

Toss something like this on there, and you’ll have a quick way to get a rough charge estimate!

Bought one, will be here on Tuesday.

If I can get some pictures of everything required for this thing to work, I could probably work on mocking things up as I have time - not promising the world but I can absolutely give it a shot.

Pictures needed - All pictures need to have something that I can reference scale with, and ideally be as straight on as possible.

  • Front and Back of the PCB (with and without trigger)
  • Trigger and/or supporting components
  • Battery (?) really this doesnt super matter since we can find/use something else if needed

If I have these I might be able to rough-draft something.

edit: many of the pictures in this thread are already probably close enough. Ill see what I can do with whats here already. Who has a 3d printer? If i were to get a rough draft whipped up curious if anyone would be able to give it shot.

I’m willing to give a shot, but i don’t have my remote with me now haha
