Dual horizon build thread (18s16p range boat + 18s8p MTB)

Hey all,

So fairly recently I came across the buying opportunity of a lifetime. Someone in Boston (guy who tried to esk8 across America), has a huge eskate collection that he’s trying to liquidate before leaving the country. Included in this collection were 3x Acedeck Horizons, one 14s8 and 2 14s6, and the price was more than fair. I confirmed the boards were in working order and naturally bought all 3. Sold one to @nrgbistro at cost, but am keeping the other two for myself.

I’ve been debating what my next build will be for a bit, but riding the horizon has spoiled me too much. The Acedeck suspension trucks are by far the best trucks I’ve ever ridden, the top speed stability is unmatched, and the suspension really makes a difference for bumps. So I figure the obvious next step is to fully invest in these boards.

The 14s8 board is my main, and is a great board, but I need more range out of it. My main intention here is to keep up with EUC rides, (35-40mph cruising for 50+ miles). Eskate is absurdly dead here in Boston, at least compared to NYC, so joining EUC rides is usually the best option. So heres the idea:

I’m having @jack.luis build me a 14s8p box pack out of Rs50 cells. This pack will act as an aux pack for the main board, mounted on top in box. This will effectively give me a 14s16p batt, ~4200wh. Only downside is that this board will be 80+ pounds now.

This pack will also act as the primary pack for my second horizon, which I have stripped the battery/enclosure from and am the process of converting to a full top mount MTB build with an esc box (sorry Jackson). The idea is that this pack will be easily swappable between the two boards depending on my needs for a ride. I’m keeping everything Acedeck except for battery/enclosure. I haven’t done any true offroading with the horizon yet so I’m very excited to see how the suspension performs.

Additionally, @AlexB is getting MBS adapters fabricated for Acedeck gear drives, so I can run 9 inch tires on both. I think he has a bunch of extras so hit him up if you’re interested in getting a pair of those.

At this point I am a huge Acedeck fanboy and can’t wait to see what I can get out of these boards. I’ll keep posting on this thread as I make progress.

Same issue with me tryna do a group ride around Seattle area. Eventually I just gave up and bought an EUC for those group ride instead. Going 35-40mph on esk8 isn’t as relaxing as EUC, especially when it gets dark…

Also excited on what you get with those RS50 cells, I’m in a process of having a pack built from those atm. Hoping they won’t let me down like the P45b did.

I was close to buying one, but I’m too heavily invested in esk8 to afford introducing another hobby to the mix.

Nice!

I had a similar setup on my Kaly board a few years ago, albeit with much smaller batteries. 12s4p inside, 12s6p p42a on top.

I ran them exactly like the diagram you drew, worked fine. Eventually I got annoyed at switching the packs over in the middle of rides, so just wired the batteries in parallel. Not a great practice, but it worked fine as long as they were the same charge when I connected them.

MBS adapters installed, thank you @AlexB! Next modification will be replacing the shocks with heavier ones. They are 250lb now but acedeck sells 300lb.

Goddamn those trucks look like they weigh like 5kg each

The back truck is incredibly heavy with the motors and gear box

For anyone curious, the sensor pinout for the acedeck horizon motors is as follows:

Red: VCC

Black: GND

Blue: Hall A

Green: Hall B

Yellow: Hall C

White: RT

D100s mounted and sensors detected! Wiring needs some serious cleanup will do that next.

She’s all done (pending battery)! I’m patiently awaiting an 18s8p p45b pack from @MichaelWA. This thing is gonna be an off-road beast. Specs below:

  • Acedeck suspension trucks, element gear drive, 6890 motors
  • Kaly 2.0 stiff deck (allegedly one of the first that Ernesto made)
  • D100s
  • 18s8p p45b brick pack in a pelican 1400
  • MBS rockstar II XLs with 9 inch tires

Yea dude we’ll see :joy: . I think I should be alright, I’m more worried about the ESC box than the pelican. If there isn’t enough clearance I’ll prob deck swap to a Deathwish.

Might dig into the sidewall of your shoe a bit.

I know a buddy of mine who had a acedeck nyx1
That esc enclosure was particularly sharp and literally torn a hole in the side wall of his shoe.
