One day I took a long break from the forum and when I came back a few month later the first thing I saw was what happen to Dereck. I never leave the house now without my helmet no matter how far Im going.
Not ESK8 related but I got into a high speed accident while downhill ski racing in which my helmet literally saved my life. Long story short I fractured 5 vertebrae, my skull, a couple other things and had some brain hemorrhaging. I was wearing a POC racing helmet and a speed suit with some minor spine protection. This was in early 2017
Holy balls. What sort of speeds are we talking about? How did the poc hold up?
They cut some new rumble strips on the shoulder of the road (far away from the fog line). They cut three sections of them side by side but each section started at a slightly different spot. It was basically a bunch of moguls about 3 feet wide and 6 feet long.
They were really not visible until I was right on top of them so I only had a moment to bleed some speed and try to hang on at ~ 15-20mph. Glad it was my helmet with the crack and not the back of my skull.
Can some one recommend some good hip pads that aren’t to restrictive?
I was doing around 60 , and my poc has a dent and some blood stains that’s about it.
The more restrictive they are, the more padding they have, safer they are.
-Hillbilly Hip pads
-Demon Flex Force X shorts
You could also just get fat af like me and have natural padding
Cushion for the fuck pushin.
Which one costs more to acquire?
It’s not the destination it’s the journey
That goes for most things, but any padding there is better then no padding.
When I ski raced across the roughly 6 years I saw about 5 medi chopper evacs from the mountain and countless other regular ambulance trips when the kid was able to be stretcher’d down.
In retrospect it’s fucking insane how many people where injured over the years and they where all kids too.
Luckily Poc makes some great helmets, did this happen during a race or training?
I was late to training so I was booking it to the race course. I was helivac’ed (idk the right way to type it) from Mt. Snow to Albany Medical. You’re right its such a crazy sport, those kids have some balls let me tell you from growing up racing with/against them.
I raced BMX when I was kid. There was an occasion where I was trying to pass another racer while in a dog leg, he lost traction and spun out in front of 4 or 5 people causing a massive pile up. 2 broke legs, a neck injury and some concussions, plus whatever else I didn’t hear about or remember.
I didn’t even know about all of that until after the race, i saw the pile up but didnt know the injury extent. I was lucky, I continued around the cut and won.
It does look kinda funny typed out I agree lol
The reason we can joke is cause I was wearing a helmet that day!
Is that the one when the Australian came first because everyone fell lol?
Yes. The ultimate participation trophy.
