Cicada Siren – My First DIY Raceboard Build

Originally, I planned to convert my Exway Atlas Pro into a race-oriented board, but the more I thought about it, the more it felt like a compromise. Instead of modifying an existing board, I decided to start from scratch and build something purpose-built from the ground up.

I started by designing it in CAD and ordering the parts. A few components have already arrived, but there’s still quite a bit left to wait for.

Trucks

The standing height proved to be excellent. The design feels stable while keeping the platform relatively low.

Deck

I really like the design of the deck. Combined with the truck setup, the axle and deck sit perfectly level with each other.

Looks awesome. Assuming the SLM gears have been working well on your other build since you’re going that route again. Have you considered trying herringbone instead of straight cut since SLM can easily produce them?

Man I’m tempted to try a set of those SLM gears to see how well they hold up.

The gears didn’t wear at all, even without any lubrication. But the Exway Atlas Pro doesn’t have that much torque. This DIY build will have a lot more torque, so we will see. The pinion gears on this build are from GDS, but the spurs are still 3d printed.

I think straight cut mod 1.5 should be fine for this, but we will see once the new board is up and running.

Cool, very curious to see how they do on a proper race board. Was just wondering if you had considered herringbone because they run a little quieter and are supposed to be stronger than spurs. Now using mod 1.1 herringbones in three different drives, 6495 reachers @175kv, 18s batteries and motor amps at 120. Even the oldest set still look fine. I’m not sure how mountain boarding gear abuse translates to racing abuse though.

I think off road has higher peak load (lotta impacts) and racing has higher sustain load (lotta acceleration and braking)? Just my assumption.

Makes sense, the shock loads from hitting rocks and from hard landings aren’t easy on gears. Those were the main two ways we used to break the Trampa POM ones. Racing gears are going way faster though so maybe more surface wear? I don’t want to derail the build thread, M300 maraging steel spurs at 1.5 seems plenty strong, but I would be curious to hear from some of the more knowledgeable members about which type of riding is harder on gears.

So far everything is coming together nicely. I’m waiting for the sheet metal parts, the 3D printed components, the esc, and the battery cells.

The cells are expected to arrive in early August.
