Boardnamics Sealed Belt Drive

LoL I’d much rather increase wheel pulley size than dump extra power to get the same result

I know your method comes with more top speed, but I don’t need that. I want POWAH, that massive shoe-ripping torque that 40T+ pulleys can give

Sorry man but I have thought a lot about this and you can’t have everything you describe in a small package, just physics and the fact belts don’t like small pulleys :frowning: Everytime you improve on one criteria, you take away from something else. Tug of war. For sealed belt drive my priority is longevity in the drive. I want these things to last thousands of km.

Decisions decisions…hard process sometimes :exploding_head:

Can we be friends?

That’s the best possible goal

I’m picturing you guys on a tandem bike now, and I like it.

BTW, Kevin, congrats on another great product. Pretty cool to watch a guy come into his own like this.

And worst case senario, you can always play around with different motors and kv and maybe even sacrifice on the wheel situation. I’m running 18t motor pulley and 36 on the wheel. might even step up to 19t. im running 85mm wheels though.
i do love massive motor pulleys + idlers, 15mm belt and you can run them extremely lose.

That’s the key difference, I’m running 110mm mostly and some 107mm wheels

This design is great, but does it need belt run off holes?

What happens if a belt snaps and it has nowhere to go? There is a chance it gets dragged into the wheel pulley in such a way that it locks the pulley up. I dont know what the chances are but if you look at the trampa design it has holes top and bottom that are covered in thin carbon fibre look tape, I assume that is what these are for. Food for thought

I raised this concern too with him. I guess tests with almost broken belt is needed. Someone has to be guinea pig, totally padded of course.

Damn! That is a smart design. And easily implementable by Kevin, I am sure.

This is exactly why I run 18/44T on my board

I promise ill stop lurking and post a build thread soon lol

That is definitely a great point I didn’t even think about. That could be disastrous.

Very good call, I didnt think of that once while reading this thread.

The optimist in me would like to think the belt would not get bunched up but would rather flop around a bit before finding a resting place. But the pessimist in me sees exactly what you mention about the belt bunching up and locking wheel. Chances seem slim but as long as there is a chance, it’s a little unnerving. I guess the simple solution would be to not break belts… but we all know it isn’t always that easy

If you are running duel motors and one belt breaks it’s likely that the motors will still be spinning and the broken belt would eventually get pulled into the pulley.

The simple solution is to put run off holes in the case, then the belt has more chance to escape. It also serves as a belt inspection hole. I personally think enclosed belts are a bad idea.

Do you have a link or pictures of these enclosed belt drives incorporating run off holes? Would like to see, for the sake of curiosity

Don’t know how I missed that. Haha thanks

Haha no problems, you can’t really see them anyway as they are under the CF tape in that image. Think it was new for the 2019 pro belt drive, 2018 didn’t have the holes

Yes the belt jamming was a concern. I had plans to test this by purposely weakening a belt at one point then running it. Of course I wouldnt ride it cause I like my bones

There is room in the case for the belt to bunch up so my first assumption is that a jam is rare. Something like this shouldnt be guessed though, so looks like a lot of belts will sacrifice their lives for science.
