Errrrggghhhh I can’t believe i am actually even contemplating this
As the title suggests, i’m in the market for an e-scooter. It doesn’t need to be flashy or crazy performance, it’s for my daughter for general commuting so I need it to be
safe
reliable
good build quality
weather proof/resistant
good value for money
I don’t know ANYTHING about scooters, so hoping to glean some information from some of you lot who might have some experience!
Just an FYI, I had a mate whose escoot’s battery ran flat and the kids have already lost the charger. It was Unagi but they already wrapped up their Australian operations. They did get it from JB-Hifi and since it was bought less than two years ago, they honored the warranty and hooked them up with a battery and charger replacement.
I could’ve fixed it myself (and it would end up tripling the range) but since it was still under warranty according to Australian law, I saved myself the trouble and he had JB-Hifi chase Unagi.
Food for thought.
EDIT: I’m still not psychologically prepared to build battery packs for other people and am not willing to take on that liability.
Range: i think around 30km is pretty reasonable to expect
Speed: in aus i think the law wants them to be around 25kph. Im happy with this although faster would be cooler, but if it did go faster i’d want a way to lock it at the lower speed
Comfort: definitely don’t want a seat and i don’t think any sort of suspension is necessary, folding would be good as long as the handlebars are rigid while riding. The inly scooter i ever rode had a folding stem and it was loose as a goose while riding, did not instill a sense of safety/security
I guess i’d be happy to spend up to 2k aud if it hit all of those prerequisites.
It would also need to be easily lock-up-able.
This would certainly be advantageous, but if it ticks all the other boxes abd is under my price point, this isn’t a dealbreaker for me
I have a mercane, the pros: solid tires + suspension so no flat tires, 20-25 mile no bs range, 26mph top speed, dual disc brakes, never had mechanical issue, dual motor 1000w
Have you checked Facebook marketplace in your area? I got a Segway Max for $250 locally from there, it was in great condition too. Solidly built and I liked that the charger is built into the deck so you just have to have a Mickey Mouse (C5) plug cable to charge it. I think they got rid of this feature after the first Max model
Look into the new Dualtrons, they’re pretty sweet. I rode one of the smaller ones and they can handle quite a bit of stop and go without feeling sluggish even at the end of the ride. reliable brakes, solid construction. Would definitely recommend to someone that needs a handlebar.
Gonna have a look over these options and what options are available locally and put together some kind of shortlist!
I did think about this and I know there are probably some great deals to be had but I want it to be a surprise gift and a used item just doesn’t hit the same as that brand new, unboxing experience.
I use an e-scooter to get to school and back. Most are NOT as weather-resistant as they claim.
You’re going to have to put in some elbow grease to make it as weather-resistant as you can. RTV silicone for any gaps, wires, etc and WD40 specialist silicone spray for the bolts and knick-knacks so that they don’t rust. Wipe the scooter down after riding in the rain. Avoid puddles. And don’t charge until it’s dry.
The only ones I know that are really weather-resistant are :
Apollos ( but their most recent models are questionable )
Kaabo Wolf King GTR
Segway Ninebot Max G30LP & G30P.
Segways can be had second-hand for cheap if you look. and Segway does offer battery replacements for them last I checked. You do have to check tire pressure before every ride and it’s recommended to have them at 50psi at all times.
The Kaabo has a removable battery but it’s heavy as hell. It’s meant more for off-roading but some people use it for commuting.
I know very little about Apollos, so I can’t help much in that regard.
There’s also Ausom scooters if you haven’t taken a look at them yet. Needs some elbow grease but the price to performance value is pretty decent.
Make sure to look at the weight of the scooter. A lot can be 60lbs+. Might be hard for a kid to lift if they need to.
