Bench Test Results: Lishen LR2170LA - 45A 4000mAh 21700…good performer but P42A a bit better

Test Report Summary: Lishen is one of the large, established cell manufacturers in China (http://www.lishen.com.cn). This is a decent performing cell, about equal in performance to the other Lishen 4000mAh-5000mAh 21700’s at 10A. The Molicel P42A outperforms this cell by a bit at 10A, 20A, and 30A.

This cell’s 45A datasheet rating is temperature-limited, it is not a true continuous current rating you can use to compare against other cells. If you use this cell at 45A you must never let the cell reach 80°C (very hot) and any use at 45A will shorten this cell’s cycle life. I recommend using this cell at 30A or lower to reduce risk, increase performance (less voltage sag), and to extend cell life. If this cell is available at a lower price and the Molicel P42A is not in stock this is still a good cell though and I don’t think you’ll see too much difference between it and the Molicel P42A.

The two cells I tested delivered 4021mAh and 4038mAh. This is decent consistency and is typical for cells from one of the larger China cell manufacturers. This cell has a pretty standard cycle life rating in the datasheet but I have not tested that yet.

Two cells were purchased for testing by me.

I want to work for the community full time! If you feel what I do is worth a couple dollars a month and you would like early access to battery availability, battery and charger testing and news, and a say in what I test, then please consider becoming a patron and supporting my testing efforts: Battery Mooch is creating battery and device tests | Patreon.

These tests only note my personal ESTIMATED ratings for these batteries at the time I tested them. Any battery that is not a genuine Samsung, Sony, Murata, LG, Panasonic, Molicel, or Sanyo can change at any time! This is one of the hazards of using “rewrapped” or batteries from other manufacturers so carefully research any battery you are considering using before purchasing.

Misusing or mishandling lithium-ion batteries can pose a SERIOUS RISK of property damage, personal injury, or even death. They are not supposed to be used outside of a fully protected battery pack and you use them at your own risk. Never exceed the battery’s true continuous current rating and keep the plastic wrap and top insulating ring in perfect condition.

Testing batteries at their limits is dangerous and should never be attempted by anyone who has not thoroughly studied the dangers involved, understands the risks, has the proper equipment, and takes all appropriate safety precautions.

Any rating in my ratings tables can change at any time as different grade cells appear on the market, we get swamped with fakes, or new information becomes available to me. Please, never assume that the ratings in the tables are permanent and will never change! Always download the latest version before considering any cell purchase.

how likely is it that these are rewrapped and “binned” P42A cells?

Zero…absolutely no chance of that at all. They look different.

Lishen makes some pretty good cells, which is fantastic as it gives us other options when so many cells are hard to source.

That’s awesome. I’m glad there’s more players in this high discharge space.

Really great news to hear!

Just picked up 42 of these from 18650batterystore for only 3.99 a piece on their black friday sale.

What are you expecting in terms of cycle life? Are these real 40T competitors or do you think they have a big drawback that’s being hidden like poor cycle life?

My summary above had a comment on that, no expectations yet but the specs seem roughly similar.

Here’s a translation of the LA’s datasheet specs…

Here’s the 40T’s specs…

How long you think till these cells would hit 80% or 60% capacity if they weren’t drained at the insane 35amps continuous? Or if charged to 4.1 and down to only 3v or something?

Don’t know…it could literally be 500 cycles or 5,000 cycles.
Depends a lot on how they are charged and stored. We also don’t discharge them to 2.5V or 80°C and that means even at 35A discharge we would get more cycle life than what’s in the specs.

I’ll be asking my patrons which China 21700 and 18650 cells they want tested and I’ll have a better idea of how the cycle life of those cells compares to the 40T and Molicels then, probably finished in February.

Welp I know which one I’m gonna vote for :joy:
