I’m sure many of us went through the same thing.

I know when I first posted solders to here I had a very similar experience myself.

Thankfully this forum taught me about a good iron that can deliver watts and hold temperature and 63/37 solder and properly tinning and flowing solder.

Thank you for chiming in. I didn’t want to seem like I was digging but Holy shit those solder flakes may actually be touching :grimacing:

I’m sorry but it reminds me of this too much.

You’re all good @Dnollie better to learn through posting your pics than to learn by fire. Even if it is a bit muddled and coming from all directions.

Don’t take it personally @Dnollie !!!

My first solders were probably just as bad. As everybody else has said, good solder makes the world of difference. I went through like 3 different soldering irons when i first started until
I realised there was nothing wrong with my irons or my technique, it was just shitty solder letting me down.

Practice makes perfect mate and the best way to learn is by fucking shit up!

I feel that.

We all just wanna help you do the best job you can.

I understand that it doesnt feel great getting called out on poor workmanship, but ultimately its for the best if you can learn from it.

Nobody here is judging you, we really just wanna help. Don’t let it discourage you from sharing your work. If anyone does give you a hard time i’m sure they’d be quickly put in their place.

Think of it this way; This is the worst you’re ever going to be! Like a skill floor; you’re not going to get worse.

You’ll only get better as you practice and do more joints

I get that a lot do you guys have beef with @tech.shit but can you not bring that here? :joy:
At least in this thread, he’s been giving pretty decent advice.

Blunt and direct people have taught me more than any other type. Learning to take criticism without being offended is one of the most important life skills you can learn.

Dont. My soldering is no where near the level of these guys but the small amount of experience that i have is due to dealing with pc’s and game consoles for so long. I pulled out my soldering iron 2 months ago after YEARS of not using one and i was able to solder my phase wires and made a decedent connection.

Its more of function over form

I did use scrap pieces to make sure that i would be able to get the hang of soldering again and set up jigs to hold my bullet connectors properly. Its all fun and in the hope that you gain from others experience.

So I got it to turn on, but the right motor won’t work, could it have something to do with the capacitor?

Probably borked the 5V rail or the MCU on the right side from you shorting the capacitor, that VESC is not worth riding on because you have no idea what damage you caused. Dont be a statistic, use it for SWD programming and testing remotes/motors on one side. Trust me, we’ve all been in your shoes before and trying to use that controller is a waste of time.
