Beginner Question Thread! 2023 Edition

Me and my dad were just using the multimeter around the esc. There was a little bit of electricity…? What exactly does that mean? And is there another setting I should see the multimeter to?

Fuck. Now it’s gotta be fried. My dad was touching the multimeter to each side of one of the purple things. It sparked and the forbidden smoke came out.

So, a few things

probing for voltage isn’t going to give you any information. Never do this when it’s plugged in unless you’re a professional and there’s something specific you’re looking for. The big brown things are capacitors. Both the + and - are on one side (near the center), so he accidently touched both with the multimeter.

Honestly, this ESC is probably cooked. You can send it to someone to determine cause of failure, but there’s nobody in the hobby that repairs them anymore.

Before you do more dangerous things, unplug it, let it sit so the capacitors discharge, reassemble it, and put it to the side

Sooo, went to power up my new build to get everything programmed and my new never used 18s battery is completely dead. I’m guessing the new style of Daly Smart BMS has more of a parasitic drain than my other one because it’s been sitting just as long with no issue. The pack is less than 6 weeks old and this is the voltage I’m getting.

Never charged it, just left it at the storage voltage the cells were delivered at. This might belong in the bitching thread because I’m pretty sure there’s nothing I can do about it other than build a new pack but thought I’d post it on the long shot that it’s somehow salvageable. Opened the pack enough to check a couple P groups and they’re drained.

Thats horrific :sob: sorry for your loss

Doesn’t that seem like an insanely fast time for this to happen?

it does. I’d be suspicious.

Maybe my neighbor used it to charge his Tesla. I’ll dust for prints.

Absolutely yes (depending on size of battery of course)

I’ve left batteries sit for years with no significant drain from bms

I’ve had multiple batteries bite the dust after a few months sitting, what magic BMS do you have?

Pretty much only ever used JBD smart bms.

I know several people have had drain issues with them, all i can put it down to is that some models may have had worse drain than others.

This is the model I have in that pack. Supposedly a new model because of “know issues” with the older version. Got that message from two different sellers. The BT module does have a power button. Maybe I should have made sure it was off…

Was it set up as charge only or for discharge? You shouldnt need a power switch for a charge only bms

Edit: just saw you said the bluetooth has a power button… what a POS

Yeah it was charge only. Do you have a rec for a better 18s BMS? Can’t seem to find too many options.

I only ever used jbd, thats all i would recommend.

Sorry if I’m not completely familiar with your issues but would it turn on if you plugged it in without anything plugged in for the switch?

At least the couple VESCs I have by default are on when you plug them in and you could just use an antispark loop key. I’m actually having some issues with that myself rn and need a new latching switch.

Also the magic smoke might not have blown some components on the pcb if you just shorted the capacitors. They store lots of energy and discharge immensely fast without issue. Can you get a better pic so we can tell what’s going on?

No, it won’t turn on when I plug it in again, I’ll go grab some better pics

Is this normal?

No, it should be balancing while charging, unless the delta is too low to balance.

Seems fine? Are you worried about the high fet temps? Not sure what’s going on there, as a general rule i try to keep my electronics at 60c or less. Some things are rated more but this is just a general principle. More heat is mo bad but without more info idk
