Beginner Question Thread! 2023 Edition

Ya I think a good power train may be the next step, luckily I don’t go with too much power while I’m ridin. I don’t full throttle and I don’t usually go past 20 mph so a couple idlers with my current setup might keep me ok for a while. I only have 40 amps per motor, it only really slips of I brake hard.

I am using matrix 2 trucks, 9” MBs tires, 190kv 6374, 15 tooth motor pulley, and 72 tooth wheel pulley. Any recommendations? I could get away with spending a few hundred.

Woof, ya I don’t want that to happen, any way to place some setting limits to prevent it while I use my 190kv? Can’t afford to put 2 brand new motors just yet after buying the new battery and new esc

If this were my board I’d be considering 2 options

1: wait it out, a bit of belt slippage on hard braking is generally to be expected, plus a lot of people are currently swapping over to @Titoxd1000 duality trucks which means you may be able to find a good deal on a used truck+drivetrain bundle if you just wait around a bit.

2: if you’d like to limit the amount of money you spend while still improving your board.
@Facko makes an excellent M2 chain drive setup that I believe you could reuse your motor mounts for.

Thanx bro:)

Don’t spin the wheels in the air unnecessarily and don’t do burnouts intentionally. Do NOT set any top speed or ERPM limits in software. Make sure slow abs overcurrent is turned “off” - it is off by default leave it at that. If you get overcurrent faults it’s safer to increase “absolute maximum current” or lowering your motor amps.

These tips help any ESC last longer, but not required to follow strictly on all setups. High voltage high kv, you definitely need to be aware though.

…and high ratio?

Just following the logical path here. It sounds like the right idea.

Do private messages get deleted on here if someone deletes their account or something? I can not find the DM from who I bought a part from in any of my dms even though I know I bought it on here and know the date too

Mandela affect

I mean I have the item I bought as well as the paypal transaction for it but just the DM is gone so I don’t think that counts

I just wanted to see if they had their OG order number to make things easier, but I don’t need it to get a replacement part anyway. Just would be nice since some of the branding isn’t as clear after I painted the part

also I guess i am now possibly the first and second person to break a surf adapter in half

What do you guys think? I really have no idea how to judge cells, if you guys could give some input that would be great, I’m looking to build a Bigger battery.

Buy them new, from a trusted supplier.

18650 battery store
Nkon
Liion wholesale

(I’m pretty sure)
All of those are trusted sources for batteries.

Are you looking to build an esk8 battery?

Not directly, I have no knowledge spot welding, but I was hoping I could find cells and send them to a builder, looking for a 12s6p or bigger

If you’re buying a battery from a builder, they will often be able to provide better pricing per cell than you will receive from a supplier

Partially because of discounts like this, if you can afford to buy a bunch of cells at once you can often get a better deal, also these prices fluctuate and lots of battery builders will keep an eye on prices and grab a bunch when they’re on sale

Good to know, are there any builders you would recommend?

Get a quote from MBoards. Fast turn around, good communication, good price, Molicels. At least I had good luck with them.

Spider battery systems and Skp are the first two that come to mind for me, there’s a vetted vendor thread for battery builders somewhere

I’m looking for hopefully under 400 bucks

A 12s6p under $400 is not reasonably achievable IMO.
I got a pretty good deal on my 12s5p P42A pack from a local builder but that was still $700

You may do better either saving up some more money or buying lipos.
Lipos are a much cheaper option but do have some compromises compared to a built li-ion pack (less 3rd party testing data, shorter lifespan, worse spec sheet inflation)

I would either be looking at lipos like these
And just paying somebody local to wire them up to a BMS (that way you can charge with a regular esk8 charger)

Or saving up closer to $800 for a well built P42A/p45b pack from a reputable builder.

If you were looking at 6P with 18650 you can use fewer cells in parallel with a 2170 pack, fewer cells, fewer welds, less labor, lower cost. Example:
12S4P Molicel with BMS, Charger, and charge port $600

Does anyone have any solution to keep my house safe while storing my 18s6p battery? I’d like a bag of a box of some sort to store my battery in
