Is there a bms where u donât have to connect wires to the batteries ⌠well where itâs essentially plug n play?
anyone know of a bluetooth pairing code for the unity?
no bms, and i gave up li-on because of the crazy cost (charger, cells, bms) and the place it takes.
i have a lipo charger who work well, and itâs easy for me to charge 2x6s with 2 wire plug than 2x4x whatever cells in serie/paralel (is the word exist?)
no pairing required, connect thru the app!
So BMS are for wussies? And I can just hook up a charger to the batteries?
Yah big lipos are just hard to mount unless you are just plopping them on your deck too clearance is an issue for some people. I used lipo for a few years still happy with that for my portable board but got a bigger Li-ion for a bigger cruiser for less hassle and more juice on the board with a slightly smaller brick.
BMS is for less hassle when charging imo but more risk of crap breaking on the board. Fancy BMS can do some telemetry about the cell health as well.
Phone asking for a pairing code
donât understand wussie, sorry.
I have a 208B charger (8s lipo balance/charge/discharge/storage etc) so, i dont need a bms
I only open the case, unplug the serie wire , plug balace and main port and charge at how many amps i need
Hey Stan, I take my bearings and clean them real good with isopropyl alcohol, let them dry, then coat them in PTFE dry lube, let them dry, then glop a couple good glops of white lithium grease in there and seal them up. They roll butter smooth from there and last forever. I used to use bones speed cream but it doesnât last nearly as long or roll as smooth.
@b264 @Andy87 Any good epoxy recommendation for battle hardening? My motors sometimes have a grindy sound. Not always and i canât always replicate it (Never while driving)
You can plug a charger directly to it. It will work.
However, this is a risk of the different p groups of becoming unbalanced. The charger will detect total voltage but not individual cells. So for example sake, you have a 3s3p (total: 12.6v charged)
You charge it to 12.6âŚbut:
p1=4.22v
P2=4.23v
P3=4.15v
Unbalanced cells will only get worse with every charge
Bms will help by bleeding overcharged cells and allow under charged ones to catch up
So is this the case with li ion where you connect a bms but not the balance wires or that only does that if you have the balance wires connected?
donât pair it⌠go straight to the app to connectâŚ
Balance wires are for the lipo charger/BMS to understand what cell is at what voltage. If you dont plug them, balance will not occur if the drift is too big and will instead cause a massive current as they try to equalize. slight balance can occur naturally between the cells as they equalize if the drift is minor
and if you have a ultrasonic cleaner so much the better
Ok I found a guy that will make my molicel pack but he says the BMS he uses you donât need balance wires, so I should pass then?
Wait what?? @pjotr47 @Andy87 @mmaner @longhairedboy
Am I missing something here? Is that even possible?
@onebluesummer to my understanding, if a bms has no balance wires, it would mean it doesnt have the balance features you would want for safety. It will simply act as a fuse for overcharge and overdischarge
If it were me, Iâd ask if I can supply him with my own bms
Yah as flasher says itâs needed if any cell or p group of cells drifts from the rest you donât want cells getting over discharged or overcharged because youâre just measuring the average on the main battery leads.
If you just pump current in or out of the main leads you canât individually balance the p groups or cells in series in the pack so one cell may be 2.8V while others are 3.2V when you charge the low one will bring the average down so will end up over charging the ones that started at 3.2
A balance charger or BMS will both use balance wires just with charger youâll have a connector on them with BMS will be soldered directly sometimes or have connector.
there are a couple of guys, WhitePony for example, that donât use BMS some claim good quality cells donât tend to drift, and they handle the task of balancing the P groups externally themselves, however I have no practical experience regarding Esk8, but itâs pretty easy to do occasionally externally.
