3D Printing Discussions, Questions and Debugging

Just achieved this matt smooth look, pretty neat

It’s just the top layer in the walls? Normally if there’s separation between the walls, it should be throughout the print. Interesting…

There’s an overlap setting you might want to play around with. I think there is a separate setting for top and bottom layers

By the looks of it just the top layer yes. Bottom layer looks fine

I found overlap but only for infill which doesn’t help in this case because i have 3 top and bottom layers.

The other overlap i’ve found is “skin” but i have no idea what all the “skin” stuff does. Haven’t even used it.

You use cura right? Try the ironing setting, it will give you a very smooth top layer.

Tried that, looks nice but it’s not worth it most of the time.

that part is a 7 minute print with my current settings. Ironing adds 3. The part is as big as your ringfinger Nail

Time to change your nozzle, I think.

The pic above is without Ironing, just for clarification.

Ironing does make is super smooth.

I agree, a nozzle change might be in order.

Skin is the top and bottom most layer. Skin should help a little. Try changing it

Did you ever tell me your line width setting vs actual nozzle size?

0.4 and 0.4.

I tried going lower but i think i only tested 0.38 line width

Try a line width of ~0.46. I was having this exact issue months ago and subh suggested a lot of things. This fixed it immediately.

Will do once i’m home.

Yeah, I was going to suggest that as a workaround, but his nozzle dia(seen from the end points of the lines) seems much bigger than 0.46.

Hence my recommendation to cha get nozzle.

For my 0.4mm nozzle I use anywhere between 0.44 to 0.5mm, depending on what feature size I want to print.

I use a 0.6mm nozzle and 0.8mm love width for reference so you may need higher

People looking to buy new printers, this review might help

@xsynatic My print width is also 0.48 mm you should have it wider than the nozze diameter. And yes maybe swap the nozzle for a new one. I mostly print PLA and PETG but I notice a significant difference in swapping the nozzle after half a year.

how much will it cost

According to the information in that link, the kickstarter-exclusive early bird price is $319 USD, then when all those slots are gone it will go up to $345. My guess is that once the kickstarter is done, the price will be about $350-375, give or take.

i’m currently trying different things.

I printed this piece 4 times, each with slightly different settings. The profile is exactly the same, the only difference is listed below

1 - line width 0.4 - Top/bottom flow 105
2 - line width 0.4 - wall line width 0.48
3 - line width 0.48 - top/bottom flow 105%
4 - line width 0.4

(Numbers are left to right)

So by that, the nunber 4 is perfect but it uses exactly the settings i’ve used before.

Comparing 1 and 4 they are exactly the same except that 1 has 5% more top layer flow but still shows the gaps

here is the piece with skin overlap at 120%. No gapps but now this mess around the circle

this is with 75% skin overlap. Still 0.4 line width. Technically no gaps
