3 Year Old Trampa Scramboard never worked..Need some advice

Hey, guys newbie here so please be gentle with me :slight_smile:

3 years ago I purchased a prebuilt EMTB from scambaords…sorry Scramboards. I never got the board to work once :frowning: I wanted a prebuilt board as i dont have time for a diy board. At first Andrew @ scramboards tried to sort the problem, he said it was a vesc issue so sent me out about 6 pairs of vesc and a new dual one but the board never powered up. I asked for him to take the board back as trampa had just released their first EMTB so was going to go with them instead but he wouldn’t let me return the board and would no longer reply to my emails. I started a chargeback with my bank but ended up not following through as I was really ill and spent the last 2 years in and out of the hospital for months at a time. So I still have the board and never got it working.

Iv been reading the forums the last few months in an attempt to get this thing working once and for all!

The board is using a 10s4p liion battery pack but the board won’t power up? I’ve rebuilt the board, made a new wiring harness using a xt90 antispark key rather than the relay and switch he had used so its much simpler but still the board won’t power on?

I have 3 pairs of vesc and one duel vesc and nothing powers up. Ive checked the voltage on the battery and its reading 36v fully charged and holding the charge. So i connected a voltmeter up to the battery and it wont power it up either, i thought it might be faulty so tried a second and still it wont power that either?

What am i missing here guys, If the battery is reading 36v but powers nothing how can that be? Am I missing something, been reading and searching for months now and I’m about to lose what’s left of my very thin hair lol

Sorry to hear this shitshow, glad you’re feeling better and up to the task of DIY!

If you dare, you can short pos and neg on the pack very quickly, this will cause a massive spark (its super exciting) but its far from a safe approach and only something mad people would do (Hi, nice to meet you)

Else I’d try to put a DC load on the battery to see that you can actually run something on it.

Alternative route is to see if you can power your ESCs from something else, maybe a DC-cube(with current limitation set at 0.5A or so). To make sure they’re alive and well.

Post some pictures of the internals and we might be able to point things out :slight_smile:

Hi and welcome!
a 10s LiIon battery should have 42V fully charged and not 36V.
But even with 36V there should be enough voltage to power on the vescs.
I don´t know how the board is build, but there might be discharge BMS as well wired up? A BMS could cut off the voltage to your escs if one p-pack is below cut off voltage.

the question is also, where you measure the 36V. on the battery directly or after the bms?

Best would be to post some pictures and show us how things look and where you measured which voltage.

36v is nominal rating so it’s referred to as a 36v battery. Fully charged and healthy, it holds 42v.

iirc
10s li-ion nominal voltage = 10 X 3.6v = 36v
10s li-ion fully charged voltage = 10 X 4.2v = 42v

With a BMS it’s important to know if the discharge goes through the BMS, or if it is used only for charging.

Also a FET-based anti-spark in the chain is another failure point.

I’d turn it on and take multi-meter reading from the battery itself, the BMS and any anti-spark, for sure a VESC can use 36V to turn on and spin the wheels.

Hey Lee, watched all your vids mate they have been really helpful.

Ive wired up an xt90 antispark switch to test the battery and vesc still wont power it on. Heres a pic of the charger he sent rated 36v as well? The extra wires was where i had a voltmeter but just cut that out to test a 9v battery to see if it was working.

Where are you based? Uk?

If youre UK based, theres a plethora of members who can help you with ease! (invluding myself :wink: )
The more photos/ videos you have and/or take, the better for trouble shooting online. As others are suggesting, if you have some way of testing the ESC’s, like a Lab power supply or some other battery with <30v, you should be good to start trouble shooting points of failure.

Can you get your hands on a working battery to test the vescs?

Yeah would be good to know your location as loads of very clever people on here are UK based.

He can just use the charger to power the escs on :wink: that’s enough to check if they still work. For motor detection and stuff I would better go with a battery though :sweat_smile:

A bit off topic, but I think worth to mention.
This battery layout is very stupid.
All current run in this two places over only one nickel strip

I see there is a fuse. Did you check if the fuse is still working?
I guess this are the plugs for the vescs?

Did you measure there voltage when battery and loopkey is plugged together?

Yeah, that mark on the battery is a marker pen from whoever built it. and thats the double connection to the vesc but i made a simple wiring harness to test the battery and vesc with the xt90 antispark so completely bypassing all this wiring in case of a fault anywhere on his wiring.

I measured the voltage of the battery with nothing connected and then with it connected with the loop key and it all reads 36volts.

So i can test the vesc with the battery charger? thats cool i will test that out tonight and see if they power on.
