Still cold and wet, definitely going to put up some contenders but dam that is a solid start! Gonna have to try to keep the elevation in check to keep up with that no stops no charging, wow
I don’t like the fact that under “no stops + no charging” rules, swapping the battery is still allowed. It feels like the equivalent of charging to me. And even though I have a spare battery at home, I somehow don’t feel like switching to the “ride 50km, swap the battery, ride the same route, again and again” scenario… ![]()
Although to be fair, charging is actually allowed too — it’s just that with 10-minute stops it doesn’t seem very practical… ![]()
I agree with you and reading many of the comments and conversations on previous Iron Foot thread it’s a way to make challenge more fair or accessible to those that don’t have large battery, or fast charging available. I hate separating Iron Foot and Tungsten Foot, it will be interesting to see how the two categories compare against each other by year end.
The charging or fast charging option in a 10 minute window or battery swap seems like a way to make it more about the foot and less about the gear imho.
The ten minute limit is great because it lets you take an emergency bathroom break but doesn’t really give you the option to stretch the rules for an advantage much but totally passes my vibe check for feeling like a single ride session or single leg of a marathon type challenge. Im not sure if breaking it down into something more complex can get closer to that “ single nonstop” leg of a ride without maybe making it cumbersome and gear focused.
If you got a friend to help - meet with a fresh battery or whatever and swap out your stuff while you pee and cram an energy bar you could turn it into a pit stop type thing and as long as the person making the attempt was honestly doing all the riding it wouldn’t change the accomplishment in my mind. That’s a lot of endurance to break the 40 mile mark let alone get into a competitive range of Mikes_Esk8’s entrance, regardless of the gear or strategy used.
Just my thoughts on it. When the weather warms up im planning on trying for it on my biggest, most comfortable build, in a 10 minute charge session with perfect pit stop conditions i would only be able to add about 7-8 miles of range to my board charging at 2500w - not seeming like a viable strategy. But a full swap would potentially work to extend one session beyond a single battery.
You’re both right — without the battery swap rule, it would basically just be a competition for who has the biggest battery. As it stands, a friend of mine is building the exact same setup as mine, so if I wanted to cover a longer distance, I could always grab his board and keep going. So we’ll see when the first challenge comes ![]()
Bumping
.
Let’s add some entries. I’d like to encourage participation of all skill levels. Regardless of if you’re doing it to “win” and regardless of mileage.
Unfortunately I’ve come up a bit shorter than I would have liked on the prizes. I contacted a few vendors asking for anything they could spare, stickers, gadgets, gear, etc and got limited responses. @Titoxd1000 has stepped up for a shirt donation, and @MoeStooge has generously offered a trophy. Both of which I greatly appreciate.
Hey! That’s awesome! But i’m gonna win anyway!
haha
Last challenge results 2022, I believe we’ll be going past 200 easily this year…
Planning to add some contributions but need some clarification on these.
Does backwards mean I have to face and look forward while riding in reverse? Or does it just mean that the back of the board becomes the front?
If I am riding bindings and don’t modify my setup would I be participating in both of these if I am riding “backwards” and switch?
Just board backwards was my vision, and ya if you keep your bindings I suppose you’d be qualified for both of em!
Careful with your steering angles riding the board backwards!
Tungsten Foot Entry
(24-hour distance challenge)
199 miles
4:17am-6:10pm
Time riding: 8h 28m
Time stoped/ charging: 5h 23m
Total: 13h 51m
5 ride legs
4 charge stops
8kWh burned
Really went for it, gave it my all. Wanted to ride further but called it for body fatigue. Nicely planned route, charge stops placed perfectly.
Ideas since my long ride…
I’m open to dropping the maximum stop time of 10 mins per stop for Iron Foot, would like to hear others input.
For Tungsten Foot we get breaks while we’re charging which I believe is important for safety and preventing unnecessary fatigue. If people are swapping boards we should eliminate the 10 min break rule? Anyone against this?
And do you want to delete the rule entirely, or change it? Because if I head out on a multi-day trip and cover 1,000 km, that would technically count as one continuous ride. ![]()
Idk, the difficulty is a part of the fun. 10 min or 15 is all the same to me. More and it just becomes the other contest. Which is good but different
It would still be how many miles you do in 24 hours. Just proposing removing downtime of 10 min rule. Will leave proposition open for a few more days.
Not competing but would say anything goes would be fun to see what happens. Trailer with generator maybe haha. Just most miles in 24 hours would be fun to see.
Let’s do it ![]()
Lead Thumb Entry
15.69 miles
36.3 mph average speed
54.3 mph top speed
32m 52s
Shockingly didn’t directly set out to complete a lead thumb entry. Just happened to come in with more than 15 miles. It’s been hard to get high average speeds in the city. Stop lights kill the average.
Alright here we go with another try.
330km/205 miles in one day
Originally, it wasn’t meant to be an attempt to beat the current record—it just happened that way.
Fan fact, the whole trip was with a trailer behind the board and into a headwind, so I can’t say I enjoyed it that much. ![]()
Beat me by 6 miles… ![]()
I’d say half of these long days are enjoyable.
Will update rankings soon, don’t enjoy your glory for too long
