Z.mote , new esk8 remote

hi,before I search aliexpress for a tiny led battery capacity indicator and try to stick it into the Z.mote I would like you to confirm: the led indicator on the Z.Mote ONLY signals whether it is connected or not to the vesc. Correct?

As far as I am aware, thats correct. Hes never mentioned capacity. Id be interested in doing something similar… Post what you come up with

I’m confused:
ā€œThere’s a single bi-color led to interface with the remote which can tell you the connection status, battery level and the current speed mode.ā€. This refers to the trigger-only version of the remote. I got the last split trigger version and I noticed that once turned on and just before signaling successful connection to the vesc, the led of the remote sends a single flash. Maybe that flesh tells the status of the battery? It seems to me that such a signal has always been blue, but maybe I’m wrong and at low battery maybe the color of that flash changes. These are only conjectures, does anyone know more about this?

Ive seen Blue,Purple,Red. I have not had the battery go low as of yet so I can assume it would flash red for low batt but no indication of what % it is

He just sent me this email with the functionality of the LED.

"If you click the right button momentarily, the battery check function will take over for about 2-3 seconds. After hitting the right button, the color you see will indicate the battery percentage. Blue color is over %70, purple is between 30-70, red is 10-30 and flashing red is below %10. "

And in regular use, red is slow mode, blue is fast mode

all of this info is obliquely burried in his videos.

soemone needs to make an easier to reference knowledge base. I was almost motivated to do it at one point… but didn’t get there.

Kman just uploaded a video showing setup for both single and dual trigger remotes. Video is time stamped to make it easier.

Hey kids.

After many years of flawless performance and pure joy I have started running into some issues with my Z-motes.

I have had 3 affected.

1- the control arm broke and I printed a new one and it is back in service. Early unit.

2- I was riding, and we stopped for a second, and the remote just stopped talking to the board.
It turns on. But there is no PPM signal. Early unit.
I just took it out of the board and replaced it with a spare Z-mote.
So I would like to Maybe trouble shoot it.

3- is the one I’m about to work on.
It’s a weird issue.
It turns on.
It connects.
It works.
But after a minute or so a yellow light flashes sometimes and signal seems spotty…

I am about to open up the board and will probably replace this one as well

Damnit all kids…

More Z-mote challenges…

The original X-motes I got were paired to a specific receiver.
Had no dead man switch.

Some had lights.

So less features, but more plug and play.

I have one of the newer ones now I’m trying to work with.

I was able to pair it

I was able to turn off the dead man switch.

So I thought I was good to go with set up in VESC .

And while setting up the PPM input it’s messing up.

When trying to see the Min Max , after throttle it does not got back to zero.

You can see the bar moving around on the screen recording below.

I believe I have recalibrated the trigger when going into the menu. But I’m am unsure as mine does not look exactly the same as the one in the Video…

Any thoughts on what else to try?

Do you guys think I have a bad remote?

I will email Kaman as well, but usually try here first.

I retired one dual trigger Z.mote. I was the second owner. Once it lost signal midride, but could be restored by cycling the power. 2nd time, it basically ā€œunpairedā€ with the receiver in the middle of the ride (thankfully I was going uphill and didn’t eat shit). This time, it could not be restored by cycling power, and I had to open up the board and undergo the pairing process again. The 2nd incident could not be explained by a brief power loss from shotty contact, as that shouldn’t cause ā€œunpairingā€ of the remote/receiver. Kman couldn’t give me an explanation remotely. Though he shared with me that he’s in the process of developing the next gen dual trigger with a telemetry screen, but no ETA yet. I have another dual trigger Z.mote I bought from Tomiboi when he carried it, and that one has functioning flawlessly.

I am not sure whether my experience and yours have any commonality, but wanted to share that Z.mote, like the boards we ride, can malfunction… So I replaced it with Puck 2.0. I miss the dual trigger ergonomics, but can’t afford to f*** around with a remote that’s acting funky.

I am sending 3 suspicious Z-motes over to Kaman.

If I get any back I will be happy…

I did start pondering if there is another remote out there…

But I am really into the trigger form factor.

So the 2 Z-motes that went down were replaced by spare Z-motes I had…

The only other dual trigger remotes I am aware of are Evolve, flipsky VX3 and Maytech, the latter 2 shared with efoil folks but vesc compatible. I personally like evolve’s phaze remote, wish there was a way to hook up to vesc.

I expect I would have an easier time with dual trigger, vs thumb wheels if I had to convert…

I did not mind the form factor of the evolve remotes at all…

Something that I do a lot with the Z-mote is switching from my right hand to my left hand…

And over time I’ve trained myself to be nearly as good lefty…

It would be a whole new learning curve with a new remote form factor…

cool!!!

@Zyb Hi, is there any way to adjust the slow mode? For me it’s basically unusable — it’s so weak that I can’t even get moving.

By the way, after 5000 km ridden with the Z Mote controller, I still haven’t had a single issue or any lag.

Has anyone had a situation with a Z-mote getting stuck on full throttle?

Actually. Maybe sustained throttle is a better way to describe it. I am not sure it was fully pinned.

I had weird throttle issues on my dual trigger zmote but they were more like dropouts rather than sustained throttle.

i’ve gone back to puck 2, i don’t think i’ve seen any reports of puck 2 fuckery.

Yes, my issue was the ribbon cable inside the remote, took a mess to pin down the issue but once I replaced the ribbon ($5) it’s been flawless.

Did the ribbon cable break from a fall or some high impact event?
