Hey all- I have my loaded vanguard and want to cut channels into it for my thin braided copper cable ~ I have a dremel and it came with a router guide that I can use… but I need the right bit. Most of the bits I’ve seen are for contouring from the edge inwards. I’m going on the center of the board- ie- not starting from the lateral margins. Anyone have any advice or thoughts? Am I overthinking this? Should I just use a sanding bit and cut into it that way?
Can you fit a spiral down cut bit on a dremel? I think that is what I’d use, or a straight cut bit if that is what you have but in my experience straight cut bits leave lots of fuzzies on the edges of the cut.
I have that piece/ I was curious about the bit itself, but thank you/ until today I had no idea what it was., was googling how to do this and saw that and was like ‘holy crap!!! That’s what that thing is for!?’ Was afraid I chucked it in the trash when gf and I cleaned the pad recently.
Can i just go to home Depot and grab any kind of drill bit for it and use that then? Not sure if I’ll be able to track down proper routing bits
A drill bit won’t be able to cut a channel as well as router bit would. The cutting blades are different. If you use any normal drill bit it will just grab and snag on the wood and won’t cut at all. I’d recommend the router bit that’s squarish shaped, it cuts well.
Pretty much this. The flutes on a typical HSS drill bit aren’t sharpened afaik and won’t cut at all. You’re gonna find the most success with a proper bit like the one @Linny posted.
