What belt you use?

What width, pitch, profile, and tooth count?

Have you ever broken a belt?

When you need to replace the belt or pulleys?

how much torque they can handle? I’ve seen the manufacturer’s specs related to speed and torque but I’m sure they’re conservative.

HTD 453-5M, 15mm wide, not sure about length.
All the belts I have either came with my Lacroix or were given to me by a friend who purchased gear drives.
Just yesterday I switched a belt because it had a tear at the side, i regularly get small stones stuck in the belts or they get squished into the motor pulleys.
Regular maintenance is always checking the belts, checking tension and screw tightness.
I always take tools and replacement belts on a ride because sometimes they break during a ride so I can make roadside repairs.
Too bad I have to take the wheel off every time.

I’ve broken many 12mm belts and a few 15mm ones. Motor pulley 15T, wheel pulley 36 or 40. Sometimes with idlers, sometimes without. Sometimes single drive, sometimes dual. HTD 5M ofc.

I want to believe that the people who claim they never break belts just don’t ride hard. But quality does differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, so who knows

Same, or not very often. Go over some cobble and you’ll break plenty of belts.

There’s definitely big quality differences between belt mfgs.

The baja was a belt destroyer. Decent belts would last 50kms, shitty belts would last less than 5

Hmm, I’m not sure.

edit: Ah, it’s more like 435, not 453.

In my case belts get fucked up mostly by small stones and grit flying around on those country roads round here.

420mm long, 20mm wide htd5m.

I’ve only snapped one belt and it was in the snow so expected.

Aside from that, I’ve had the change the belts once because my alu pulleys started wearing down and getting skippy.

I exclusively use German industrial belts.

Gates Powergrip ftw

HTD 405 15 for the MTB
And 425 15 for the Trampa Orsomm

Do you have a favorite store you buy them from? I used to buy from beltingonline but they seem to mix & match the manufacturer you get; it’s not always strongbelt

Great shop, scrolling is necessary. dont use the search function

HTD5M, different length, 15mm wide

have not snap any 15mm, but i’ve snap 11mm and 13mm with short distance, 15mm seems to hold up better

i don’t use branded stuff, just whatever can find off taobao

I still haven’t managed to break a single belt. Even on my super torquey Evo that I was constantly full throttling.

Ya, 5m belts can only come in 5mm increments since the pitch is 5mm

Gates is not a german company though. They are from Colorado.

Strongbelt is a very good german belt company

Fun fact, Gates headquarters is still here in Denver, (engineering and research), but they closed the manufacturing plant here 30 years ago. They finally tore the building down around 7-8 years ago.
They were the largest employer in Denver in the 50’s and 60’s
