I flashed the wand using my flipsky dual 4.20. Worked fine. I did need to modify the plug slightly because pin out was different. It’s documented in this thread somewhere.
Any VESC Based ESC will work. Unfortunately a lot of manufacturers think its clever to sell ESCs without SWD connectors. Those ESCs only have SWD pads on the PCB. Whenever you brick such a ESC or need to use it as a programmer, you will face issues like needing to solder cables to the pads. The Wand might get a bootloader allowing USB upload.
Cool thanks @Trampa so the escs that work straight off the bat are?
Vesc 6 Trampa
Escape
Anyone know of any others?
On escapes you need to switch the pins on the jst plug.
Flipsky escs should have the swd port populated as well if I remember right.
Mostly focbox doesn’t have the swd port populated, but it’s not a big thing to open the cover and plug in the male side of the jst plug.
You need to do the same on the wand side too as the swd port isn’t populated there as well.
Took me a while till I could update my wand. Not sure what was the issue, but guess a not so good contact with the pins on the pcb.
Very much hope trampa will make it happen to use the micro USB port in future for firmware updates.
Actually Flipsky ESCs don’t have SWD connectors, only pads. Focbox has no SWD, some other clones don’t have SWD. In general it is a bad design choice to not have a back door to the processor. If a FW update goes wrong, the user is locked out and needs to open the device and solder cables to the PCB. The manufacturers simply don’t understand the importance of SWD on a VESC compatible device. Especially entry level equipment will get into inexperienced users hands and the chance of bricking a device is higher for such users. After doing some research on third party ESCs I was quite amazed about the general lack of SWD ports. I have a lot of requests from users who tell me they have a problem with a VESC 6 and after a while it turns out they have a Flipsky, sold to them as being a VESC 6. The moment it gets clear that they don’t own VESC is the moment the user can’t find the SWD port.
all this drama about having the pins populated or not. I once bricked a focbox, I just held a cable like this one (see image) with my hand and flashed the hex file just fine… no need to solder any pad/cable. Super easy to do
If you have holes…
Can just using pogo pin adaptor for this. Is very common for electronic. No need for solder. If pad is on PCB then is no problem.
@Trampa you made me curious so i checked the Flipsky site.
You right, the new dials don’t have ports but the pads easy to access from the top.
All the old models seem to have a header on the pcb.
to be honest, people who can’t plug a header to the port, probably as well don’t want/need the swd port to reprogram anything.
Vedder posted Wand source code a few days ago.
Implemented in zephyr rtos. Legit.
Did we ever get the ability to use 2 dongles simultaneously?
You can, but RT Data is then coming in from two sides. You can definitely pair up a Wand to two ESCs.
Any way to disable data from one esc?
@Deodand, any progress with Unity and Wand? I need a new esc and have been learning twords the unity, but ive still got this unused wand that I’d like to eventually play with.
Installed the remote yesterday
Everything went easy, updated firmware for remote, vesc and nrf module without a glitch
Well done Benjamin and Frank
Hope to test it on the streets next coming days
Future request:
-I/o control for lights, horn, switch off pts switch
-Profile selection
-Data logging for stats and stuff without phone
We bang on it!
Talking about future features…
I would love to see positive and negative motor and battery amps
One thing I’m really missing are the max values, same for Vesc-Tool app. Normally I want to see the max. values AFTER a ride, I can’t monitor telemetry data while riding, exception is the big display for speed. But e.g. if I ride crazy fast on heavy terrain I would prefer not to have to look at the remote and check the max. speed afterwards.
In short words, a big digit for RT value and a small for max. value(s).
One more wish for christmas, please same control modes as PPM for the Wand. There is no “Current Hyst Reverse with Brake” mode
Good point Rich
We should make wishlist
Future request:
-I/o control for lights, horn, switch off pts switch
-Profile selection
-Data logging for stats and stuff without phone
-Max values after a ride
-Same control modes as PPM receiver
-Odometer
Its a bit off topic. But could you tell how many amps the board was drawing while going into smart reverse on the steepest street of the world?
