I just got my hands on a Bustin Sportster with a bad battery, and I am looking to get it replaced. When I have the board torn apart, I am also considering swapping to a VESC. I haven’t been able to find much guidance about how to set up hub motors on VESC, so I am making this thread to compile information in one place for future reference. What I am mainly looking for is what settings to use with the setup wizard and what settings to keep an eye on/change after the wizard is run. Thanks in advance!

Wanted to bump this back up to see if anyone has any recommendations on whether to VESC swap the bustin or keep it stock. Thanks again in advance!
Setting up hub motors isn’t much different than setting up any other motor in VESC. The number of pole pairs will likely be different, but that isn’t important to the motor actually running correctly, AFAIK, and is mostly just used for RPM and speed calculations. Other than that, you should probably choose a smaller motor than the actual size if you’re going to use the wizard because they don’t cool well and need to be run at lower power than comparable motors that aren’t in a wheel.

Awesome! Thank you. I may just go in and set it up with lower current than the wizard does.
