What’s the top voltage you’ll get to? You should wire in a voltmeter or better yet a meter that tells you everything possible about the battery:voltage, how many amphours have gone in, watts… so u know what’s going on. As said above.
Aliexpress chargers break often. Meanwell sell some quiet reliable ones u just have to find the right one and they sell mannny models.
Telling people to put their questions in the noob section is annoying, not helpful, and happens often. People should just scroll through stuff they’re not interested in. It dumbs down the forum when anyone asking a basic question (or not) is told to put it in one place with no title. We’re not creating the Bible; it’s just a forum for people to ask questions or show off their stuff and should be as simple as that.
Shouldn’t the complaints go to the bitching thread? @marketthrowaway and @Evwan gotta keep it organized here guys. Seriously though it gets off the rails fast and becomes boring. I push people to the noob thread gently, otherwise it can quickly put someone in a defensive mindset and they stop learning or listening. And the advantage of the noob thread is it has a lot of traffic so simple questions that could be dangerous or expensive get answered quickly before any damage is done.
Im on a couple of other forums that are a little less structured than here (and that is saying a lot) and they are almost useless. (Meshtastic im looking at you) they suck responses take weeks or never happen. People answer your question without answering it then mark it solved and closed. And generally don’t help anyone unless the already have advanced knowledge unless it is by accident.
What is going on here is genuinely nice, and the biggest organizational difference between them and here that i can see are the big general topic threads like the noob thread, battery builders thread, and similar that tend to be more heavily watched
Just my humble opinion - and a good bit of derail: try to answer the questions AND point them at the wiki’s and general threads. Both is best
I am thinking the easiest way is to buy a second charger, and NOT modify it. For balance charge. Which also covers my using cheap Alliexpress chargers that break.
Might try to create a hole where the charger amps are adjustable.
Ill just add this, I just had my second anniversary here, and am building my second board, and this time few compromises. So you see, there are things that SCREAM not a noob, so if you cannot define such accurately, and show their ignorant asses JUST where to find that noob area, then expect them to react as if this is a hostile zone.
Get some kind of smartbms, get some kind lab bech lower supply, set the balance start voltage at 3.9 in the bms, charge at your preferred voltage and amperage through the power supply.
Im sure that has awesome capabilities, but I am building a commuter board, with easy maintenance, troubleshooting. Idiotproof. Did think about a power supply though as it is soo versatile. But again, a mistake and things get toasty.
You have almost perfectly encapsulated my build style for commuter boards.
With the exception that I have ALWAYS had 80 90 100 choice by knob. LUNA. And so, I want to have my battery last in tip top condition, and getting an 80 percent charge is crucial.
I would like to see your schematic, and after careful evaluation, I could give an opinion. It sounds like you should be involved in the next generation of high voltage anti spark switches. I only know diodes only allow to pass one way. I dont understand further, till you further explain.
Oo. That’s a nice solution. Could u please do me a favor too and tell me the diodes i need to get my 87v charger down to 85v?
There’s no pay but gained respect.
As far as developing the next generation of high voltage antispark switches… I’m betting u like the simple loopkey with antispark plug for it’s simplicity and reliability.
Most BMS that I’ve seen won’t balance at all until/unless you use the full voltage charger. I’d recommend to do that at least once every 20 - 30 charges or so, for a healthy battery. For a battery that isn’t healthy, or is in the late stages of its lifecycle, probably more.
Some BMS may do this, and if your does, then great.
Of course, if your battery is empty you’ll start out at a lower voltage. It’ll be current limited and the voltage will be lower.
You only have to worry about the no-load voltage (charge end voltage).
