Trying to get TB VESC to connect via CAN-bus cable

Hi everyone,
VESC newb here. I’ve watched a bunch of YouTube tutorials on how to set up dual VESCs but for some reason cannot get it to work. Here is the current status:

  • 4.10 TB VESC using VESC Tool 3.40 firmware
  • Both VESCs work with the receiver plugged in directly (as the master)
  • Neither VESC work with the CAN-bus cable (as the slave)
  • Using the App Wizard for configuring both master and slave
  • Master VESC has ID set to 3
  • Slave VESC has ID set to 4
  • Every time I select the CAN forward button the VESC disconnects.

Any suggestions on what I should try next? Thanks for any support that you can offer. Really want to figure this out!

Joshua

There are tons of issues with The VESC-Tool and non-Trampa VESCs. Try this tutorial and see if canbus works. If nothing else you can rule out a hardware issue.

Thanks! I’ll give this tool a try.

Update. Reflashed both VESCs with the Ackmaniac firmware. Configured the VESCs per the tutorial. Same result. Both VESCs work as the master (with the PPM remote). Neither work as the slave (with the CAN-bus).

Do I need to enable the CAN forward button? There wasn’t anything in the tutorial about if that is needed. I found this instruction online but it doesn’t make sense to me:

If you configured the 2nd VESC as the slave using the wizard, then can is enabled.

Chances are you either missed a step or at some point you powered one of the VESC’s and bit the other while can was enabled, which can burn out the can chip.

I am having a similar issue as the OP.

When I go to setup my Focbox’s I do not even get this option during set up wizard. It just starts scanning the can bus and asks which vesc is connected to the remote.

Ya the solution was using ackmaniac esc tool. I don’t think that the most recent vesc tool and firmware supports can-bus slave VESC’s anymore.

Ack just works, flawlessly.
