The Step Bro - A Largely 3d Printed Build - COMPLETE!

I’ve never tried heat set inserts cos nuts are easy and cheap and they work :man_shrugging: plus nylock ftw.

Fucking worked, i was stoked. Cross threaded a single nut, but one out of 16 not too bad! It got in far enough for it to just be considered as permanent thread locker  even though it worked, i wouldn’t recommend it as a viable method… was kinda touch and go

I did think of maybe using some petg over the top of the tpu like a washer that would hold the nut, but i wanted to try the glue first. Those bolts are permanent and will never need to come out so it’s done now anyway

Ooooh the basalt is prettier than I thought it would be… keeeeeennnnnn

When cros threading you massively reduce to contacting surface so it stains on one little part instead of sharing the load on all of the thread.

In this application I wouldn’t worry to mutch just run a tap thro it will help a lot and call it good.

Ooh… looks like snake skin :fire:

Trimmed up my tips and i’m much happier with the new shape.

Countersunk all the holes and filed any sharp edges

Filled in around all the t-nuts with thickened epoxy. I put a bolt in each hole to protect the threads… hope it worked

Not quite sure how i’m gonna protect all these threads when I do the actual skinning, but I do know it’s gonna be a fucking pain in the dick.

Just order a custom griptape maybe? That’s too simple for you though i guess

The skinning is to add strength to the deck, i can’t skip it.

Final grip will be vicious on stomp pads :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Grease the tip of a bolt, thread it most of the way into the underside, fill the insert with hot glue, back the bolt out. You’ll be left with a membrane of glue at whatever thickness you want.

Got a little CAD time in this eve. Pretty happy with the shape of the box, still gotta figure out how i’m gonna split it to fit on the print bed. I got ideas, just need to finesse them into reality.

I don’t think heat set would work very well in tpu. Tpu is such a weird material I think it would just deform around it. They work amazing in the materials though if you set them right

Added a charge port hole and split the model in 2. First half printing now.

Tried some binding positions and locked them in with m6 t nuts. Also added some for the top box to bolt down to.

Pretty much ready to skin!

Got the box sealed together, seam line isn’t too bad.

Gonna be a super snug fit in there, but the box is already bigger than I’d like, so it is what it is, just gotta make it work.

Great work, it’s coming together to be a cool board

Cheers dude. Looking at this top enclosure next to the bottom enclosure, I kinda wish I had’ve designed both at the same time and translated a bit of the design language from the top one into the bottom one… but no matter, the function is the most important part!

Best part is you’re designing this yourself so it could evolve but I reckon some dirt and mileage you’ll not worry about it.

Your stuff is great inspiration when building.

Haha yep as soon as it’s covered in mud its not gonna matter what it looks like

I used the 3dp walls to drill the perimeter holes in the top and bottom lids and designed a little bolt on scribing jig to make the holes for the esc.

To make the perimeter holes, i first cut the lids to size and then used double sided tape to hold the lid to the walls while I drilled. Worked a treat!

They still need a lot of finishing work, but this is good progress!

I wasn’t happy with how the solo heatsink looked a little set down from the top face of the plate.

Savaged the underside with a router/trimmer to get the top to sit nice and flush. Much happier now. Definitely gonna paint these plates black, will probably do the same with the plates underneath too just for consistency

Future Man.

Why does it seem weird to me to have bindings with the double positive stance…

Have you ran that before?

Why do you want bindings anyway?

I also feel weird about it! But the only good reason i can see to mount them more traditionally is if I spent a lot of time riding switch, and I totally won’t

I can’t remember if I tried it on Madness or not. I know i fucked with the positions a bunch of times tho

i’ve paid a lot of attention to my stance over the past couple of years, and I feel like i’ll be ok with it set up this way.

Want this board for primarily off road bumpy shit so the bindings will help stop me from bouncing off the board, and should also help with hard, sharp cornering

No offence but… that kinda looks like you can add lego to your ESC for extra style points
