The SKP Ionic is here and ready to ship!

Those are janux drives on old surfrodz. I feel like I’m back in 2019 :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I only discovered this site in September 2024. I can tell I really missed out on some special times. It kinda sucks, but I love that it’s still going.

The price difference is Linnpower Ox, in terms of being “ not run of the mill” and innovation the second example is Linnpower The One.

Oh and the other part, burst vs continuous etc isn’t clear, but The One is apparently 12kw and the Linnpower Ox the motors are 8kw and the ESC is 16S 100A bus 180A phase (little more than Solo)

I’m not saying to buy one or the other but just the competitive options might be why it’s not being received brilliantly right off the bat

and I just now realised, I’m pretty sure you can swap the motors as all their boards have a way to turn on “self learning” usually by pressing the power button three times quickly after turning it on. So basically VESC motor detection. But these things are insignificant for a surface level comparison I have gone into too much depth on a different esk8.

I feel like so many people just look for the best price:performance ratio and be damned with the rest.

Locally built and supported goes a LONG way for me. I haven’t owned many prebuilt boards, but the ones I have, a big consideration for me was the locality and ease of customer support.

When you buy a board from China you’re pretty much up shit creek if anything goes wrong with it, and shipping costs for warranty can be expensive if the mfg even wants to honor it.

It’s not fair in so many ways to compare a board and company like this to Chinese prebuilts. It’s a totally different ball game.

At the end of the day, a product is only worth what the customer is willing to spend. There are plenty of customers out there who will pay the premium for local. And there’s plenty of keyboard warriors who won’t :man_shrugging:

surfrodz are how I fell in love with RKP :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Also I trust the power ratings of the SKP board about 10x more than any board from china. Id be very surprised if the Linn esc can match the solos at 18s

The fact that this is even a debate really shows how far Chinese boards have come

Dude, let the man sell his boards in peace. If you want to buy Chinese prebuilts, go for it. A lot of us are DIYers and have used SKP solos and reachers for years and understand that quality comes with a price.

@Mobiusray sick boards man. A lot of us are DIY fiends and would love to see more pics inside the box, wiring / battery build details etc. ride pics or footage would be cool to see too. Congrats on the new offering. Hope you have one to demo at the next esk8con.

I should probably just drop it at this point, but the Hobbywing ESC in the OX is 8 kW for two motors or 4 kW a side. Solos are 6 kW a side or 12 kW for two motors. This, at least in the 18s4p configuration, is on paper 50% more powerful. You need to be careful about marketing. Especially with Chinese prebuilts, power, current, etc., is always total unless it is explicitly stated otherwise. They do say the motors are capable of 8 kW a piece to try to trick people into the exact mistake you’ve made, but the ESC and board are only 8 kW total.

kWs

The Linnpower raceboard says 12kw output power and 8kw motors (which indirectly means more low end torque) and the Ox I think doesnt confirm that’s output power but it uses a larger battery and says 8kw x2. It was never an exact comparison between these 2 boards, but the overall competitiveness of Linnpower and other brands was what I wanted to point out.

@Shadowfax
That is fair. I apologise that this has gone on so long, just wanted to try explain why people might not be as happy as SKP expected from the get go, check if there was anything exceptional about it I had missed, and then replied to questions or my errors. So I’m out from here

8 kW motors, just means motors capable of that power by some rating. It has no effect on low-end torque whatsoever. Phase current and motor KV determine torque practically exclusively.

Also among other things, this is on their page:

Custom LINNPOWER 6487 ×2, 8000W total (board limit), 170KV — each motor rated at 8000W (16,000W total)

That is saying the board’s total output is 8 kW, as it is labelled elsewhere on the page you linked, but the motors are rated for 8 kW each.

Even that 8 kW claim seems suspect. They also say 16s 100A, which comes out to 6.7 kW at full 4.2 V charge. I’d guess it isn’t really 8 kW because you should always assume the lowest number you can reasonably figure out from their product page for Chinese prebuilts. Idk what math they used to get 8 kW, but 6.7 kW is probably the real number.

Edit: My best guess on the 8 kW number is that the ESC is rated for 75 V and 100 battery amps. That gives 7500 W, which they probably round to 8000 W.

Dam guys, friggin 8kw from one modor, I struggle to pull 5kw from a whole setup these days :sob: ride like grandpa :old_man:

There was some chatter here about battery building, for the last 3 years i have trained various people to do this work for me, infact for the last 2 years, i can probably count on 1 hand how many batteries I have personally built. Most have been built under my guidance by people that worked for me. One of them is Isaac, Isaac was my longest time employee, close to 3.5 years with me, and for the last 1.5 years he has been doing ALL of my battery building and some board assembley. Today is his actual last day working in my garage.

That being said, he is quite talented and will continue making batteries for SKP from his own home workshop that he is setting up. I will also continue helping him as needes. Im sure @IzaksPhotos will pop in here soon to say hi to everyone.

Is that copper I see…?

You know it, most straight double stack and single stack packs we have been making for the last year or so have used copper

Isac will still be assembling packs for SKP. He is an excellent builder, and I look forward to continuing to work with him.

Did he learn from the ground up at SKP or did he come in with prior experience?
