Hope u are doing well. This thread is great.
Inspiring me to do a “life after crashing your car due to epilepsy/finding out you have epilepsy thread”
They will want to see you when they look back so get out from behind the camera! You are very fortunate. I only have my kids every weekend, they aren’t in to danger as much, they have other fantastic qualities. I have a group ride this morning, only time I ever see another sk8.
Making them breakfast, tea, cocoa because I’m hustling them out the door early so I can play.
If you kids live with you full time, be thankful,if they sk8 same. Soon mine will go to college or tire of traipsing across bay every week.
I’m happy to share this silly hobby with all of you, everyone else thinks(knows) I am insane.
Have fun, take care everyone, tell you kid / person how proud you are of them
This build is so clean. Nicely done!
I used to have a very similar build on a Demonseed 42. If you ever want more grip, the hoyt 5” would probably fit and we’re so much fun on my dremelseed.
It feels good knowing there are other survivors on this forum that can relate to this rollercoaster of an experience. There are still some side effects that are present 2 years later. While I wish that wasn’t the case, it’s helpful to have the reminders of what I went through. It’s now a part of my story and I do appreciate the things that matter differently because of that.
Heck yea, me too!
Dang man, that’s quite the story. Would love to hear more.
Another good reminder. You are full of all kinds of good advice!
Thanks man. I liked how your Demonseed build looked with the hoyt 5" wheels. Looked like a fun setup. I’ll definitely give this some thought for future builds.
Minor update on the Flux. Pulled off the enclosure, which felt like opening up a time capsule. Everything looked clean and intact. My building skills have grown so much over the last 4 years. It’s kind of fun to see my old work and reflect on how I would have done things differently today.
Stripped out the enclosure and cleaned it really good.
Here are some components that are going to be repurposed or sold:
So much insulation, hot glue, foam and tape removed!
In 1 hour… I was able to tear down a board that took me nearly 6 months to build. Still feel kinda sad about that. Oh welll, it’s now ready for the next chapter in the build… high voltage!
Everything still looks so cleeeeaaann.
Haha it be like that. Its always surprising how quick you can tear something down, especially if you know how it went together
I’m full of something
Last weekend the weather was unusually warm for Oregon in October. 80’ in the valley and 90’ at the coast. The typical weather pattern this time of year is a mixture of rain, wet and more dampness, so we decided get outside. Most of our riding this year has been around our small town, so my daughter and I decided to drive 45 minutes south to a larger town that has some fantastic bike paths.
I used to live in this town so I’m familiar with how to map out a good ride. There was a new section of bike path recently installed at Dorris Ranch, so we incorporated that into our 24 mile plan.
Bike path along the Willamette River.

My brain was so confused with this strange combination of leaves on the ground and warm air.

Handed the camera over to my daughter, just for you @Sk8tedad

Stopped along the way to check out the view. She’s the best thing ever.
Sprinkled in a few bridges along the way.
12 miles into the ride, we made it to Dorris Ranch. This place is seriously the nicest spot I’ve ever ridden. We are so lucky.
Found an empty parking garage on our way back. My daughter loves to turn on the LEDs.

This was the first real world test with the new Haero Bro build. This deck is very comfortable for long rides. It has more flex than the Flux deck which helps with foot fatigue and general comfort. The flat profile with the integrated “gas pedals” provided a strong sense of confidence.
My only complaint is really just the drive train. I’m convinced that plastic hubs with an unsupported wheel pulley is a bad combination. The plastic MBS Rockstar hubs have a little too much flex and the Lacroix 72t wheel pulley have integrated stand-offs that place too much leverage during acceleration & braking. This results in some wheel pulley play as well as some squeaking & groaning, which absolutely drives me nuts.
The next chapter in the Haero Bro build will be some MBS Rockstar Pro II XL aluminum hubs combined with some wheel pulleys with no stand-offs. The goal is to align the unsupported wheel pulley as close to the wheel bearings as possible, for less cantilever. More to come on that later.
Remember, every day is a gift.
This was so good dude.
I hope I can do something like this one day.
Much inspiring!!!
Coming back from the edge gives such perspective, you rock dude, i love a good story with a happy turnaround
I love seeing posts like this more than anything else on this forum
Dude, I’m confident that these kinds of adventures are right around the corner for you.
It’s very true, your perspective does changes so much.
Thanks man, this means a lot. It definitely motivates me to document our adventures more often!
What an amazing place to ride. Super jealous of all those trees.
So filled with positive energy which is the best medicine imo, the boards are great dude & love how the whole fam are in on it ![]()
Fantastic! It’s good to see you healthy with the kids! This is what life is about!
I look at my photos and I see everyone but me. I looked back and hot dam there are not a whole lot of pictures of me, well this is selfish of me, I just left a selfie of myself and kids up, stupid look on my face and mainly grey unshaven face ( I look inbred)My kid has it on her screen saver . She also found a perfect way to tell people how to say both my kids first name

It could be worse my son’s middle name is Tadhg( say tiger with out the er)
I mentioned previously that I wasn’t happy with the combination of the plastic hubs and the unsupported wheel pulley on the Haero Bro build. The MBS Rockstar hubs tolerances aren’t the best around the bearing seat, and the offset on the Lacroix pulleys created a bigger cantilever than I was comfortable with. This caused excessive creaking and groaning when rolling around, which drives me nuts.
The Flux is currently in pieces and will probably stay that way for awhile, so I decided to experiment with the MBS Pro XL hubs that I used on that build. I messaged my homeboy @IDEA to see if he had any 72t wheel pulleys and sure enough he had exactly what I was looking for. These beautiful pieces arrived 4 days after I sent a payment. Pretty impressive considering these pulleys traveled 5,523 miles from Krakow, Poland to Oregon.
Comparison between the pulleys:
Then I mounted the Idea pulleys onto the Pro XL hubs. Notice the difference in offset between the edge of the pulley and the wheel bearing. I’m convinced that minimizing this offset will result in less stress on the bearing seat.
Let’s measure the offset just for the heck of it. I measured from the face of the bearing to the outside edge of the pulley, like this:
The Idea pulleys have an offset of 20mm:
The Lacroix pulleys have an offset of 32-ish mm:
That’s a difference of 12mm, which is quite a bit! You can see what that difference looks like when I moved the XL Pro/Idea setup back onto the Haero Bro. Here are the wheels pushed all the way onto the axle:
Then I move the motor mounts 12mm closer to the edge of the hanger:
The tolerances already seemed way better when I tried rocking the wheels around, so I decided to take it for spin. And wow, happiness has been achieved.
I’m in love with this board.
I grew up in Eugene.
I’ll definitely have to go check out the Dorris Ranch segment. I’ve never eSk8ed the original river trail, but misspent my entire youth riding bikes on it.
Ah memories…
Also, beautiful trip report @monsterbuilder
Wow, small world. Yeah, definitely worth checking out the Dorris Ranch path. Where do you live now?
Bellevue, WA. I was back in Eugene not that long ago, maybe early summer? For whatever reason I didn’t bring the board even though the river trail has been on my list for a while.
I will be passing through around Thanksgiving and will have the board with me, so might sneak a ride in if it’s not too cold/wet.
.
Minor update on the ION Drive endeavor…
I now have two complete boards finished. One of them is getting ready to be packaged up for a trip south to @dskate for a video review some time this winter. There are four more rollers right behind these two. I’ll take some assembly photos of the last four when I make some more progress.
My wife helped me get some stickers made. Really happy with how the logo turned out.
Here are the two completed boards. Trying to decide if I should place the logo in a vertical or horizontal orientation.
Kinda leaning towards the horizontal orientation at the moment… Either way, I think the aesthetics are working out nicely.
Stickers look great! Go with horizontal for sure.
